After following the OPT thread below

http://www.sonicfoundry.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=121991&Replies=10&Page=1

with interest, I thought I would put things to the test. As well as Acid 4 I also have Sonar2, which according to Cakewalk's promotional blurb also supports OPT.

Sure enough Sonar2 has a "View" menu with an "OP Panel" sub-menu...and if I look in there WOW! ...I see "Sonic Foundry MIDI Piano Roll Editor" and "Sonic Foundry MIDI List Editor" as registered OPT plug-ins.

...I'm starting to think there's something in this. Now, I would never want to use SoFo's MIDI editor inside Sonar2 (..though what would I give to do this the other way around???) but being interested in the new technology I eagerly click on each option in turn.

What happens? Absolutely nothing.

So now I have to log bug reports...but with whom? No doubt SoFo are too busy with all the bugs in Acid 4.0 to respond to this one, and are Cakewalk going to dedicate time to getting their arch-rival's MIDI editors to work in an application that has far superior MIDI editiing capabilities already? Then what if they start blaming each other? Can we expect co-operation between SoFo and Cakewalk to resolve this?

...okay - tongue firmly in cheeck typing the above - its no big deal to me, but it suggests that the practice of OPT may be some way away from the theory, at least for now.

...so here's a copy of the e-mail I sent to Cakewalk and SoFo's tech support on this:

"Hi,

I recently purchased Acid 4.0 and was interested to see that its MIDI editors are written as OPT plug-ins.

I've been a long time user of both Cakewalk/Sonar and Acid! and was aware that Sonar2 also supports OPT, and sure enough I can see Acid's MIDI editors as registered OPT plug-ins in Sonar2 under its "View" => "OP Panel" where they appear as "Sonic Foundry MIDI Piano Roll Editor" and "Sonic Foundry MIDI List Editor."

However, clicking on them does nothing - no panel appears, in fact no activity at all takes place.

Now, as I'm sure you can figure out this isn't a major issues for me - SoFo's MIDI editors are nowhere near as good as Sonar's (...if only it were the other way round - Sonar's MIDI editing capability being available in Acid 4.0 as an OPT plu-in would be awesome...) but I'm more interested in this from the music technology point of view.

If Acid 4.0's OPT plug-ins appear as registered plug-ins in Sonar, then they should work, right?

I'm also intrigued to see if there's enough cooperation between "rival" companies to make OPT work, and this seems to me to be an interesting test!

If you need any more info from me to resolve this, please ask.

Best Regards, Neil Palfreyman"

...if anyones interested in this watch this thread and I'll keep you updated!
