I'm thinking of getting something like the JL Cooper MCS2 to control the transports in SF products. Any one else doing this?

Vegas and ACID donot support external control devices like the JLCooper MCS2. Sound Forge can listen to standard MIDI msgs and route them to commands.

There's a program called 'bome's midi translator' which takes incoming MIDI info and converts it into keystrokes - so you could tell it that C1 note on = pressing space bar ('play' in Sofo apps). Never used it, but you can download a demo (it's postcard ware!). Don't know if the control surface you're after works using MIDI?

You can try the Contour ShuttlePro; works pretty good - controls almost every function in ACID, Vegas and Sound Forge, transport as well! Thirteen assignable buttons with jog and shuttle wheel. Only about 80-100$.

Are you using this? I checked out the website, looks pretty cool! Says it comes with preconfigured settings that include Sonic Foundry products.

Yeah, I thought about that. I'm running an +1800XP w/ 1gb ddr ram on Win2K, so I hope I'd be OK.

Yes, I use it on all SF products...runs Sonar/Reason as well. It runs in the the bkgrnd but the CPU drain is neglible...I even have one for my laptop(which ain't no CPU monster, fo sho!). No drain to speak of. If you don't want it to run in the background, you can switch it off until you need it. Basically, it emulates keystrokes so all/any of the keystrokes we use to control our programs can be assigned to this thing. I'm telling you, it works great! And if you buy one and don't dig it, PC Mall (or whoever) has a return policy. But for 89.00, it's hard to go wrong. Been using for a long while now and wouldn't if it wasn't great. Hey Groovewerx, I even edited Geri King with it!

I see you post most actively on Acid side of things (at least recently) so perhaps you are not the person to answer this - then again, I hope you can point me to a solution anyway (or maybe tell me a solution is being address in VV4). Anyway, back in May of 2000 you replied to a fellow with . . .

Vegas does not support Sony 9 pin directly. Vegas will slave to MIDI
Time Code (MTC). You will need a reader/converter to do this.

To achieve the best results you should also make sure that your audio
hardware and video hardware are sync'd to a common clock. If this is
not done, then you will get drift over time.

. . . like the felow who responded to you said, I too have video decks synced to house clock, but I am not experienced enough to know if I can get RS-422 control of a pro vido deck via a "MIDI->RS-422" adapter (or even if such a thing exists).

As you can probably surmise, I too am needing better control of a pro-deck than IEEE-1394 provides (i.e. insert edits). With Premier there is software I can buy to allow RS-422 deck control. Other software like liquid Purple also allow this (I cannot comment on FCP, but suspect they too do it).

Meanwhile for the VV3 workstation we have a proMAX DA-MAX+ on its way to handle RS-422 component analog deck control, but since Firewire doesn't provide for insert edits, I wondered if I could use some other way of controlling my Sony 9-pin protocol edit recorder.

Like many video facilities, we naturally enough would like to integrate VV3 with the decks in the plant (especially since the decks are all equipped with RS-422 for this very purpose). Anyway, I am hoping there is some way for me to accomplish this mission (if not immediately, then perhaps in the upcoming VV4). Is there more information on the subject?
