Sound Mapper, is the windows mixer/driver that Windows uses to produce sound for the OS. Basically, your sound card driver is routed through Sound Mapper. You usually don't want to use this driver for Sound Forge or any other audio app, but since every PC has a "Sound Mapper" driver installed with the OS, Sound Forge will default to this "Sound Mapper" driver. This is probably, for people who don't take the time to dig into the Preferences folder, to be able to hear sound when they press play in Sound Forge. You are better to use your sound card driver, because it elliminates the extra step of Sound Mapper and thus increases performance.
