On-board soundcards rarely sound decent. No doubt the Layla will sound vastly better. You might also want to look into the MidiMan "Audiophile 2496" sounds great and can be had for around $179 or less. Here is a review:

DigitLife also has free soundcard analyzer software, you might want to test your current soundcard and see how "plenty good enough" it really is.

Just putting in "m-audio audiophile" in google gets a few banner ads down the side claiming to sell the card.

There's also quite a few going on ebay at any given time, and you might be able to eek out a deal as good as $100.
