Subject:New user needs help with sound quality

I've been using Found Forge 5 and now 6.0a for a few months and have been doing fairly well with it. I have learned much of what I know from the book Sound Forge Power.

This is my problem. I have a file that is very loud and irritating to the ear. I posted a small selection of the file on the web for your review. It is in WAV fromat and is 833 kb.

I'd appreciate your taking the time to check it out. The link is

Thanks,

Dan,

I checked out the sound clip and it is very distorted. As far as correcting this goes, there is not much you can do. Well placed EQ may take the edge off it but this is like that long standing goofy question that appears on this forum every week: "How do I remove the vocals from a track taken from CD?". Answer - you can't (without really altering the track)

The golden rule is - once the file is recorded - if it exhibits distortion or over modulation, it's done. No editor can remove distortion without completely altering the track drastically. Probably so drastic that the clip will not be usable.

Cheers,

Cuzin B

Danny,

I too, listened to the file, and not much will help. Like CuzinB said, it is distorted, most likely because the level was recorded too hot. Since the sound wave was low, I am assuming it was recorded on other equipment and then re-recorded into the computer. My guess is the first recording was too hot. There isn't a lot that can help the file after it is in this shape. However, there is lots you can do to prevent the problem in the future. Let me know how you recorded it, how you got it into the computer, and such, and we can isolate the cause and fix it for the future. I am a pastor (from the wording on the file, I assume we are on the same page here!) and I have 22-years in the sound business, so I can help, and am willing to do that.
