Subject:Why ASIO?

As I've been using Vegas programs for a couple of years with great results, I don't pay much attention to the latest greatest. This new Acid has me intrigued because of some features (namely time signatures) but what is the fuss about ASIO? What is it? I have the Delta card that everyone seems to have trouble with. Do I need to use ASIO? I direct record acoustic instruments, very little MIDI. So what's the deal with ASIO anyway? What will it do for me!!? |

It's that midi latency thing. Without ASIO to reduce latency, it's like: 1. Press a key on your midi controller. 2. Count "One Mississippi, two Mississippi". 3. Hear the note. If you aren't going to use midi, I don't think ASIO provides any significant advantage. I don't profess to be a driver guru, so I'm not sure about that...but I've lived through steps 1-3 above, and 'tain't no fun. |

The only apparent advantage ASIO (which, I believe, was developed by Steinberg) has over something like WDM is latency, especially with MIDI. Through my tests, WDM seems about equal to ASIO for digital audio. I think SoFo optimized the audio engine a little more in ACID Pro 4.0 for WDM as well. Iacobus |
