Subject:How do I use the drum kits in the GS Soundfont

Maybe I'm a dummy but I'm having trouble figuring out how to select different drum kits with the Sonic Foundary DLS soft synth. I figured that it was like GM so I set the MIDI channel to 10, but I still get non-drum patches. The hybrid.acd file doesn't even try this -- they actually use a couple of different DLS banks on different instances.

I actually got it to play drum sounds by fiddling about -- changing the midi channel repeatedly.

What seemed reasonable to me (set MIDI channel to 10, insert patch change to set kit in list editor) doesn't work.

Any ideas?
Anyone?

I'm having the same problem. I too tried channel 10 as well as
others but all to no avail. Everything else about the softsynth
works great for me, but its most practical and used application in my studio
will be drums if I can get the sounds to work.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Dave

Sudenly it occurs to me that the notes in the MIDI clips may not be on MIDI channel 10. These are MIDI files and the notes can be on any channel. That may be worth looking into.

Nate,

Patches 112 through 119 are percussion sounds and these
play fine. I have no problem with these sounds.
But these are not what I'm talking about, and perhaps
chaircrusher too.
The drum kits listed beneath the explosion
patch at the bottom are what I want to play.
These sounds:

......................Patch# Bank MSB Bank LSB
Drum Kit Standard......0 ......0 .........0
Drum Kit Room .........8 ......0 .........0
Drum Kit Power ........16 .....0 .........0
Drum Kit Electronic ...24......0 .........0
Drum Kit TR-808 .......25 .....0 .........0
Drum Kit Jazz..........32 .....0 .........0
Drum Kit Brush.........40 .....0 .........0
Drum Kit Orchestra.....48......0 .........0
Drum Kit SFX ..........56 .....0 .........0

Channel 10 does not work. Clicking around on various
things I haven't been able to get ant drum sounds
from these as these patch and bank numbers are
the same as other sounds. For example, I wanted to try
the power kit so I set the midi channel to 10 and inserted
a patch change for the appropriate numbers.
I don't get a drum kit though. I get the organ that
has the same numbers as the power kit listed above, (16,0,0).

I'm not very experienced with midi so maybe I'm missing
some small detail, but I just can't get the drum kits to
make any drum related sounds.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

Setting the MIDI channel on the MIDI track should play only the drum kit patches in the DLS synth. Hmmm.

Could you email (peterh@sonicfoundry.com) me a small sample acd-zip project the shows this problem?

FYI: The patch and bank numbers for drum kits can be the same as for the voiced instruments. The DLS synth knows "internally" which voice to use based upon channel. So even if the patch/bank is the same, the drums should always play on channel 10.

doctorfish:
Try this. Open the Hybrid.acd-zip that comes with Acid 4.0. Mute all trackes but the Hybrid Piano. In general under Channel, change it to 10. Play back the sequence or just the loop. Let us know if you get percussion or piano.

I previously stated that the notes may show up on a different channel than the MIDI channel you want to play back. Apparently, the track MIDI channel takes care of this. Oops.

Pete, TeeCee,

Thanks I'll keep at it. I must be missing some simple thing.
I'll send a file to you Pete if I can't get it working today.

Thanks again.

doctorfish,

I'm having the same problem with my acid pro 5.0. It's very annoying. If you figure how to access the channel 10 drum kit, please let me know. It seems like that the only way that I can add a drum sound is to go to the midi piano roll editor, and I would prefer doing it that way. I want to be able to play my drum sounds. I get better results when playing the sounds.

TeeCee, I know, but I wish that there was a way to heard the drum
sounds from the drum kits. It seems odd to do it that way.

?

Try this:

-Insert the Sony DLS Soft Synth. Double-click its icon in the Mixer.

-In the Soft Synth Properties window, change the Channel to "10." You can preview the various kits here.

-Access the track properties of the particular MIDI track you've assigned the DSL soft synth to. Click the General tab. Change the channel to "10." Now anything you play back will be routed through the drum kits.

Remember that if you want a different voice (or kit), be sure to go back to the soft synth properties window and simply click a different voice in the list.
