I want to use the surround feature on acid, however, what sound card will allow me to have 6 seprate outs. The creative lab cards all appear to have digital outs. Can someone please shed some light on this for me.

Hello,

I would wait a little while because, from Peters response on the Surrond Mixers thread, you have to use a card that has six outputs, which would be Delta series cards, but they are having a problem with the drivers right now, but the Delta company is working on an update. The Company is actually M-Audio at M-Audio.com. They have good cards at a great price, and they also have digital cards for 5.1 surround. But lets see how this all works out.
You can use the digital output from the creative card but you have to get a reciever or encoder that has Surround capability.

See ya, Rockitglider

6 channels does not mean AC3 or DTS encoding (that's for the plugin coming later, I guess). The M-Audio Delta 66 has six outputs: 4 analogue and two SPDIF digital (3 pairs of stereo outs, really), which could be used in the right configuration to drive six discreet speakers. But again this isn't Dolby Digital AC3 or DTS encoding.

The Delta 1010 would have enough analogue outputs to do the trick without requiring the use of the SPDIF digital outputs.

But as mentioned, they don't work well at the moment...

You could also do the trick through multiple sound cards...for $120 you could populate every PCI slot in your computer with SBLive!s and have 12 outputs! ;-)

Not something we recommend. With multiple card, the drivers would have to permit synchronous starting otherwise they will not lineup on playback.

Sorry, I should have put a few more ";-)" and a <sarc> or two at the end.

Thanks guys,
I appreciate the feedback. I am aware the encoding is a different animal...by the way, Minnitonka has a great encoder application. I am looking for mixing capability...to send to my speakers in real-time and mix live. Also, I believe a digital alternitive is a good idea. I could send to my Digi 001 (adat opt) then out with 6 analog outs to a DTS receiver, then out to the speakers. That will work!! Then, for encoding, record to the digi (all 6 tracks) save file and run through encoder. Wala...surround DVD or CD.
What do you think?
