Subject:Has anyone figured out the "Input Monitoring" yet?

I can't figure it out. Also, you can insert a MIDI track before you record it...I assume this is to import pre-recorded MIDI tracks from some other program, yes? Also, if I'm gonna record some MIDI and I've inserted a soft synth, how do I route the incoming MIDI to the newly-inserted soft-synth. Also, Acid is NOT, I repeat, NOT saving my environment settings...any idea why? Thanks, all. |

I don't know about the last part of your question, but I do know you should be able to record MIDI through a soft synth via the "MIDI Thru" on the Record dialog window. HTH, Iacobus |

Hey MD, Ok then, how do you implement your solution? When I hit the drop down box in the 'Record Dialog' screen all I can see is either the device I'm recording with(Record Device) or the 'MIDI Thru' is either grayed out or shows me my sound card outputs. No sign of the inserted soft synths. If I go into MIDI preferences, and make a choice for 'MIDI Thru', say "LB1", when I hit the aforementioned 'MIDI thru' drop down, I see 'LB1' not FM7 synth (or whatever). Ok, that's all fine and dandy, I guess, but now how do I route the output of LB1 to the input of FM7? Have you done this successfully? Halp. |

Here is the procedure: -Add your softsynth(s). -On the softsynth view, there is a MIDI input port selection button. This tells the synth which input port to listen to. Also note that there is a solo button on the synth view. This permits many synths to get input from the same MIDI port, but allows you to solo the synth you want to listen to. - From the softsynth view or the options menu, there is an "enable realtime MIDI" button/menu item. This will put ACID into a live mode. From this point any MIDI input recieved will be routed to your softsynth and you can play it like an external synth. When you are in the record dialog, the input port will have its thru box enabled and list all the softsynths and MIDI ports you have thrued to this input. Select the one you want, and you will then "monitor" the input. Peter |

Hello, I record MIDI through Acid's Monitor input from a MIDI keyboard. Once you have a MIDI keyboard connected to your computer you'll have an input selection for it, and you hit record and start playing through the keyboard, to the softsynth, to the blank MIDI track, and it can even be done while playing drums and other tracks at the same time. Although it puts a great stress on the machine. See ya, Rockitglider |

I had to set the "External Midi Input Port" in the "Soft Synth Properties Window" before input monitoring would work for me. But once I got it working, I found it to perform much better than using Sonar with the WDM driver. |

Exactly. Note there are two areas for MIDI thru routing. One is the MIDI tab in preferences. After you select the MIDI inputs and outputs you want to enable, you can right click on the second column to assign hardware thrus. The other is to select the MIDI input routing for a softsynth as you describe. Peter |

Thanks for the info about the right click. I couldn't figure out if that second column was editable or not. Are there any plans to make that a dropdown? |

Don't know whether it will be a drop down, but it will be more obvious. Definitely something that slipped through the cracks on us. But hey, you know about it now<g> Peter |

Yes. Just enable the external thrus from the Preferences |MIDI page. Select the input and output ports you want. Then right click on either the MIDI thru from or MIDI thru To colum of the port to set up your input thrus to hardware. Note that it is one Input to many outs. Enable Real-Time MIDI (Alt-F7) from the toolbar or the Options menu. You will not have realtime thru to your external hardware. Note also that any track routed to external hardware previews from the MIDI editors and the Chopper to the ACID track assigned MIDI destination, be it external or softsynth. Peter |

Subject:RE: Outboard Synth Question

I have the input and output midi routing down with the outboard synths that I'm using, but I have a "monitoring" question. I have an outboard midi keyboard/module and a stand alone synth module. In the midi section of the preference page, I have my keyboard synth available on midi input 1 on the midi input port column and also available on the midi output 1 on the midi track playback column. I have my other synth module available on midi output 2 on the midi track playback column with its midi thru set from midi input 1 so I can trigger it from my keyboard. I have no problem recording midi notes into a midi track and have no problem getting either synth to playback using the device selection button on the midi track. However, when it comes to "monitoring", is the only way to audition a synth in record mode (where you can pick what synth to route the midi input to)? There is no way (that I can find) to seperate which module gets the midi input signal in normal playback mode unless I'm recording or I physically de-select one in the midi section of the preference page. As the configuration is set now, both synths play. Any help anyone? Merlyn |
