After your VSTi is installed, you need to Options -> Preferences -> VST Instruments and browse to the folder where your VSTi is installed. Then click on the checkbox next to your VSTi to "lock it to the project". Then in the mixer, click the insert soft synth icon (looks like a keyboard) and select your soft synth. After that, you can insert a midi track and select your soft synth. Hope this helps.

For clarification:

You tell ACID which VSTis are available. This is an app pref that will be remembered for every ACID session that follows.

The lock next to the plug indicates whether it is currently in use (or ever has been used) during the current ACID session. We had to prevent users from disabling a VSTi that was currently in use in the active project.

Note also, that the enabling the VSTi does not mean it is loaded and running, but just that it is available for use in the project. We only load a VSTi when it is in use and part of the ACID mixer.

One of the other aspects of the enable/disabling of VSTis is that if for any reason a VSTi causes a crash, we mark it such so that the next time ACID runs we skip over that plugin if we can. This way we can 'track down' those plugs that may be causing problems and still permit you to load a project with a suspect VSTi.

Left Drag the vertical "bars" on the synth view and the window will undock itself.

Then double click on the window title bar and it will resize itself to accomidate the VSTi.
