Subject:SOUND FORGE 6.0 vs VEGAS VIDEO 3.0

Hi everyone --
I wonder if someone might be able to help me.
I'm looking to get some digital audio editing software.
I'm not sure whether I'd be better off going with Sound
Forge 6.0 or Vegas Video 3.0

I want to be able to produce broadcast-quality stuff for
radio...heavy production pieces with voice tracks, music,
sound effects, etc.

My understanding is that SF 6.0 gives me more flexibility
in terms of audio effects but that VV is better for multitrack
purposes. I realize that SF comes with a scaled-down version
of VV.

For most of my audio projects, I would probably use four
or five tracks. But there could be times when I'd want to use
even more...as many as 7 or 8.

And I want to be able to produce stuff in stereo.

I would greatly appreciate any advice anyone might have for me.
Thank you for your time, consideration and assistance.

Cray,

Welcome. If you are doing any multitracking at all...you only have one choice and that is Vegas. Soundforge is an awesome editor but only two tracks at a time. If you are getting into radio promos and that sort of thing - Vegas is your app. We use the entire SF toolbox (Vegas, Forge and Acid) for our media production and the entire line is awesome.

Cheers,

Cuzin B

For sure, just like CuzinB said: you need multi-track software like vegas if you are going to be laying sounds. However, SF-6.0 which comes with a limited addition of Vegas would work for you if you woun't need more than 8 tracks and multible submasters.
Vegas can also do DAO (Disc-At-Once)CD burning, SF-6 will only burn TAO. (Track-At-Once)

Be forewarned that the LE version of Vegas only supports 4 audio tracks. It also doesn't support CD burning.

This is what I do.

I use SoundForge 6 and Vegas Audio 2.0h. I do not use the latest vegas. I use Vegas 2.0, which I picked up recently for about $25. SF is a great editor, Vegas Audio 2.0 will do all the multi-track you can imagine for radio production.

Since most of my radio production requires recording one channel at a time and putting them together, I record in SF and mix in Vegas Audio.

I use this setup for concert spots, voice overs, and anything else radio related. I understand there are some editing capabilities in Vegas, but I have mine set up to use SF as the editor. I have not tried the LE version of Vegas Video 3, as I really am satisfied with Vegas Audio 2.0. In fact, the LE version of Vegas Audio 2.0 was plenty for most of my radio work, and I used it for some time.

If your production requires taking other people's stuff and making it air worthy, you will benefit greatly from Noise Reduction 2.0. I continue to be stunned with the results of this set of plug-ins.

I burn CDs with Nero. It does what I want.

If you want to edit (stereo or mono) then SF 6 is the go. IF you want to lay up tracks then mix them then Vegas is the go. Although I have mixed tracks with SF (2 at a time) using paste special by dropping one track on top of the other.
On sf 6 there is a version of video vagas. In most cases you would need both.

I should have known that Vegas LE wouldn't come with CD burning capabilites. I had Vegas Audio-LE for a while and that had 8-trks. Thanks for correcting the misinformation Chien.
