Weird Problem.. 4 TECHS STUMPED! Over a year we have used SF5.0 and had no such problem as this. With SF6.0, the "PREVIEW",in extracting from CD, sounds "scratchy, like an old 78". We have tried this on 3 computers with the same result(only with 6.0 installed). The wave playback sounds fine after recording. The "Scratchy" is just when listening in "preview" and only on 6.0. No problem with 5.0. We noticed the INPUT of the internal CD drives is controled thru the "Screen Mixer" volume controls "AUX" or "CD" in 5.0(depending on which drive the CD is extracted),however,in 6.0 BOTH CDs feed thru the volume control for "WAVE" for "preview" or wave playback. SF techs say there is NO difference between 5 and 6 on how the CD audio enters the program. If so why is it thru different volume controls in each program. Could the "wave" volume have any effect when listening to'preview'in extracting from CD mode...like some kind of feedback? GOT HELP! ASAP!!!! PS...remember 5.0 works problem free. We use HP8560C/Riptide SC/Windows 2000 |

Both 5.0 and 6.0 actually extract the audio in the same manner, but preview has changed a bit. Sound Forge 5.0 supported preview from the CD-ROM drive's analog output only, which is not guaranteed to exist, much less be hooked up to a sound card. So Sound Forge 6.0 uses digital extraction to preview. I'm not sure where your problem lies, but do you have any problems playing a CD through Windows Media Player? If so, then it is probably a configuration problem. You don't need the CD output enabled at all, since the previewed data is extracted by Sound Forge and sent directly to the selected Wave device. |

Sonic, Re: Listening to Extracting CD Audio in "Preview". The scratchy sound is heard only when "previewing" on the extracting window. There is NO problem playing a CD through Windows Media Player.. Only time we hear this "scratchy" sound is when we play a CD using the "preview" button in the extract window. Can you suggest any other ideas??? Our guys are stumped as to where it's originating. Has anyone else reported a simular problem? We've checked everything we know, including loading 6.0 into every computer here in the studio. Same everywhere. One of our other computers has the Sound Blaster "live" card and we get the same. At first we thought it might be the Riptide card...but that was eliminated because we do not have the problem elsewhere with other programs and the fact that we tried it on the computer with Sound Blaster. Just with the SF6.0 "preview"... By the way we did do the latest download upgrade of 6.0 and still have the problem. Thanks, Ronnie Jones, NTR Productions |

Stange problem. For some reason, it works perfectly fine for me. Previewing off of a CD, or even off the hard drive produces a crystal clear track. |

No, I haven't heard of this before. Have you tried changing the setting for "Extract optimization" in Options->Preferences->CD Settings? Are you using a supported OS and do these machines meet the recommended minimum system requirements? Does it happen with any CD or just CDRs or just one disc? While I'm still leaning towards this being some kind of routing or hardware issue, it is possible to re-enable analog preview inside internal preferences: 1) Select Options->Preferences while holding down Ctrl+Shift 2) Select the "Internal" tab 3) Scroll down a little or type "cd" into the search box until you find the field entitled "Digital CD Play Preview" 4) Click on the "Value" column next to it and set the value to "FALSE", then tab or click away so focus is removed from the edit box and the new value sticks. 5) Click "OK". At this point, you've reverted back to Sound Forge 5.0 style analog preview. Please don't attempt to experiment with anything else in there. They are hidden for good reason. J. |

J.. Will look into this along the lines you have suggested. Your answer does give us more to think about. I beleive all reccommended minimim requirements are being met and the OS is Win 2000. Yes, any CD produces the same problem. (preview sounds fine in SF 5.0) As last option, we may make the adjustment to revert preview to same as SF 5.0. Will let you know if it continues. NOTE: IS THERE ANY CHANCE THIS WILL CAUSE ANY OTHER PROBLEMS WITH SF6.0a IF WE SHOULD MAKE THIS "REVERT PREVIEW CHANGE"? Thanks again. |

The solution you provided worked like a charm. There is no more clicking during preview via audio extraction in 6.0. Thank you for your assistance. |
