I bought a synthesiser from Yamaha. I pluged it in through my midi port into my computer, but in Acid and every other music program I have, all i hear are piano sounds. The sequences come out in the right notes and order, but everything is a piano and not the voice I have selected on the synth.

I also tried to record to audio by running a line from my "phones" jack to the "line in" on the computer. It works, but 65% of the sound if not more comes out of the right speaker.

Please Help

Thanks

Check the input balance for your sound card, output balance for your synth, and I'd recommend using your main outputs of your board -- not your headphone jack. (You might also have a bad cable).

The reason you are only hearing piano has to do with your settings (Piano is the first General Midi instrument, and the default voice for most synths). Changing the voice manually on the synth isn't the best way to go -- learn how to change change the voice through midi commands. I'm not familiar with how Acid works this -- I use Sonar for MIDI. You also have to set up your synth to "receive" midi commands. Depending on what you want to do, you have to change it to Ploy or Omni mode (whatever is explained in your synths manual).

You basically have to hit the books and follow the instructions. It takes some trouble shooting and tweaking when you're first starting out. Be patient. It's worth it.

You could also think about recording digital audio rather than MIDI right into ACID. You could then use the effects available straight from the synth.

Typically, most keyboards have a left and right 1/4" out. However, unless you've got a pro-quality card like the Echo Mia, you're going to have a dilemma trying to figure out how to get the output into your computer. There are converter cables and such, but that would dirty the signal.
