Subject:Dealing with distortion

Ok this needs a little setting up:
I've got these files I'm editing that are all speech (lectures). Each lecture tends to have a slightly different recording sound level. The majority of the files are too hot; the speaker is too close to the mic. By reducing the volume and in some cases adding Peak/Clipping restore, makes the files quite acceptable when listening with my headphones (connected to the computer) but if I test the same files on the car or home stereo the subtle distortion in the voice causes a buzzing of the stereo speakers.

Can I get rid of that buzzing sound - whatever it is that is aggravating the stereo speakers?

Tried smooth/enhance but that seem to make things worse.
I'm a beginner so sorry if this long and awkward question. I just feel that there is some frequency that I should be able to remove that should stop this buzzing. Take the edge off the sound. BTW: both my car and home stereo are quality BOSE systems and everything else sounds great on them.

Try reducing low end frequencies. Most speaking voices are above 200Hz, and most rumble/buzz occurs below this point. You can probably pull everything from 200Hz down without it making a noticeable difference to the quality of the voice.
