Find a local dealer, see the product (Toaster2), get a CD, go online and get a CD key from them after telling them you liked the demo, blah, blah. Don't be too worried about NewTek stuff rocking your Vegas world, it's mostly good for real-time production, not as much for post. They actually include Speed Razor just to have a real capable NLE in the package.

Aura is pretty much "Photoshop for animation", and almost competes with After Effects. The free version is "Aura DV", essentially Aura 1 with DV features. I'm not really a fan of their widget set for controls, but it's a perfectly capable app good for doing little edits on frames and such.

Point of note: Compatability with Vegas 3 with an alpha channel can be attained by using Type 1 AVI. Aura doesn't appear to speak type 2 so well. But I have gotten avi's in and out between Aura and Vegas now with alpha channels without too much difficulty.

well...i'm just jazzed to have a "paint on video" app. i have mediapaint 1.0, and it would be so cool if it didn't crash non-stop. strata seems to think they will have a mp update (new version) possibly fourth quarter this year.

i hope so. it has such potential!

If any of you folks who have tried Aura also tried SF's Viscosity, how do they compare? Is aura much better than Viscosity ? Any added or finer layers of functionality ?I think Viscosity also had that type I file problem, at least you have to render avi clips into uncompressed ones, to get them to play in Viscosity.

It actually occurred to me later how similar Viscosity and Aura are. Aura is definitely more advanced (it has some pretty cool features like animated brushes and motion tracking), but as usual, it's interface isn't nearly as good as the SoFo counterpart. Takes a little getting used to, and it has the annoying Mac-like habit of making lots of the controls based on a click-and-hold popup menu. It does have almost all of the same visual effects you'd find in Photoshop, and a whole scripting language (which I don't do anything advanced enough to need).
