Hello all,

I need a soundcard that records 24-bit with Sonic Foundry software. I heard that the M-Audio Audiophile 2496, for example, won't record in actual 24-bit using Sound Forge because SoFo doesn't support ASIO. Now I'm just quoting what I read, people, because in actuality, I have no idea what the heck this all means. But, basically, I wanna know if the Echo Mia will record in true 24-bit with SoFo products. I will be running Windows 2000.

Anybody?

To answer the original question:

ASIO has no bearing on being able to record with 24bit quality. No matter what card you get. Sound Forge will be able to record in 24 bit, if the sound card supports it.

Hello Rednroll,

24 bits isn't posible with WDM drivers on Windows 2000 (By a Kmixer bug of Win2K), and a few cards support 24 bits with MME drivers on Windows 2000. Isn't card problem, is a Windows problem.

I posted this the other day in the Vegas forum. It states that under certain circumstances true 24-bit recording is possible with WDM - my Frontier Dakota seems to be one of them. Also, Win2K SP3 is now out and supposed to have to fixed version of the kmixer. I have yet to hear any feedback on this. Anyone installed SP3 to fix kmixer yet???

Wow. I think I stepped into something over my head. Well, the damage is done, and I have an Echo Mia sound card on its way to me. I'm running Windows 2000 pro. Will my 24-bit files suffer? If so, what must I do to get my 24-bit accuracy back? And is it really such a big deal? I have our I.T. department installing SP3 right now, by the way. Thanks.

Allegedly, the SP3 update should allow you to record true 24-bit WDM as the kmixer bug is supposed to be fixed in it. Sounds like you should be in business. Please let us know how things work out.

I am going to try SP3 soon to see if it fixes a problem I have where my apps do not see the additional 16 optical I/O ports on my Frontier Montana expansion card.

Hello,

If you want to test to play and record 24 bit files:

You need make a -100 dB 1kHz (for example) tone and save on a 24 bit file, send this tone by the digital out of your card and record by the digital in (For test this in analog you need a very good equipament), if you will be record the -100 dB tone, congratulations, you don't have problem with kmixer bug.

for play -100 tone you need almost more than 16 bits of deep (max "theorical" for 16 bit = 96 dB)
