The format you are referring to is just the audio stream from a DVD. If you playing back DVD's on your computer, your software player is most likely sending out an analog stereo signal. As you have seen when you attempt to play back the .ac3 file, you just hear distortion (or what a digital stream sounds like through an analogue card). Check my last reply here - http://www.sonicfoundry.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=7&MessageID=114586 for the information on previewing and playing these files back correctly on your computer. |

Hi. Thanks for your fast answer, but I think the problem we (Mathis & me, he has written the first question) have is different. I have a soundcard which has a digital out, (SPDIF and optical). It doesn’t have a separate 5.1 out. (only stereo). I think the problem is, that Soft Encode, and the other programs I tried, don’t send the signal in Dolby digital through the digital out. Only my DVD-Player-software is able to send the sound of DVDs and *.vob-files (that's why I asked how to create vob files out of ac3 files) out of the digital out of my sound card to the receiver (I hear Dolby Digital sound). My question is how can I play ac3 files (with which program) so that my soundcard sends my receiver the ac3-sound? What happens when I put the ac3-file on a DVD and play the file in a stand alone DVD-player (with the receiver on the digital out)? Does that work? Which preferences are necessary in Soft Encode for this solution? Thanks in advance. Tobias |

If your sound card supports digital out, you should be able to preview the file from Soft Encode and play that back through the digital out of your sound card into your Dolby Digital receiver. If this is set up properly, you will only hear your audio mixed the way you set it. If you are hearing a horrible white noise, that is actually your sound card playing the .AC3 digital signal and not decoding it. Contact the sound card manufacturer and make sure you have the latest drivers installed and look for any other information pertaining to the playback of a Dolby Digital Source. Like you mentioned before, your DVD's play back correctly, however, they may be getting mixed down to a stereo signal and being played back like a normal .wav file (wave playback). |
