Subject:Splitting a file into multiple files

How do I separate a long audio file into several smaller audio files (besides cutting, creating a new file, and pasting ((which takes a long time)))? Also, if this is possible, is there any way to automate this process so that the files will be cut where silence occurs? I have audio files recorded from records, but I just have one track per side of the record. Can Sound Forge recognize the pauses between the songs and separate them into different files, or is this asking too much? I know how to do this this "old fashioned" way of cutting and pasting, but any help in making this process easier is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Note, these instructions are for the full version of Sound Forge. The XP/Studio version doesn't have regions.

You can place a marker between each song, as well as at the beginning and end. Go to Special / Regions List / Markers to Regions. Then under Tools click Extract Regions.

You can also use Tools / Auto Region to find the regions for you instead of placing markers. You may have to do some manual adjusting, especially if you have lots of surface noise from the record inbetween songs.

That's just what I was trying to do. Thanks! I couldn't get the Auto Region tool to do what I needed, so I just placed the markers manually. Once the markers are in place, is it possile to convert them into regions and then extract them from the Batch Converter, or do I have to do this for each file individually? BTW, thanks again for the previous help =)

Yes, the auto-trim/crop tool does this automatically. It has a preset for this very task.
