I'm getting a strange result using Batch Processor to process mono wave files to MP3. I'm using Batch Processor 5.0b (160) to convert a 32,000 Hz 16-bit mono WAV to a mono 64 Kbs 44,100 Hz MP3, in this case with no effects in the chain. The computer is a 1.3GHz Pentium III, Win 2000 Pro, Creative Audigy soundcard. Custom MP3 Audio Output file Settings: Bitrate is "64KBits/sec - 44,100 Hz", Medium quality (I've tried all settings, same results), VBR unchecked, Convert to Mono checked. The problem is with the quality of the output file. I think I am getting a 22,050 Hz quality instead of a 44,100 Hz quality sound. I would expect subtantial "noise" artifacts in the signal in a stereo 64 KBs 22,050 MP3 file. However A 64 KBs 44,100 Hz Mono MP3 should be quite pure sounding. If I do not check "Convert to Mono", I get the noisy 22,050 sound and a stereo MP3 output. With "Convert to Mono" checked, I get a mono file with a 44,100 rate, but with the 22,050 quality--lots of noise artifacts, same sound as the stereo output. It's as if it were producing a low-quality stereo 22,050 file, and then converting it to mono with the degredation already built in. But--on one computer--for no particular reason, the "Convert to Mono" checkbox grayed out, as if it were non-applicable. Lo and behold, it produces a high-quality 44,100 Hz MP3, comparable to the 44,100 Hz MP3 produced by MusicMatch. For the life of me, I can't figure out why this box grayed out on one machine and started producing good files, while the other machine still shows the box editable and checked, and produces poor quality files. (The only difference is that the other machine was a Windows XP laptop instead of a Windows 2000 desktop--otherwise same software.) Can anyone give me a lead here? Thanks. Bob |
