What were they thinking?!!?

As a newbie with VegasVideo 3,...I have been amazed and delighted with every lesson in the tryout process. However, if there are any criticisms there is one! It's a biggie in mind!!! If I'm wrong in my logic,...I'm very flexible to other opinions!

When I plucked down the cash for Vegas Video 3, I expected everything to be set to go.

Who at Sonic Foundry made the decision to addtionally make you pay for the MainConcept MPEG1 and 2 before it could work and import/export those formats!!!

That, in my opinion was purely "bonehead"!! They should have worked it in the cost of the VV3 software and left it alone! That agreement with Mainconcept should have been handled and PAID for behind the scenes and long before the software shipped so that it could have been "TRULY PART of Vegas 3" and not another hidden cost to bite you after you just spent dollars on the program.

It just doesn't sit well and I would rather pay it within the cost of VV3 ONCE, as opposed to separately or twice.

Otherwise, call it a plugin and consider it what it truly is. An option.

That's it! Everything else seems first class so far and I can't wait to dive in deeper!!! My compliments to Sonic Foundry!!!

done,

I guess SF decided that most VV3 users would be importing raw video, editing it, and exporting it in the DV format. For those users, MPEG functionality is irrelevant.

Also, check your files again. I think MPEG functionality is already there, hiding somewhere.

That's true,...

Oh well. Not everything is perfect. I tend to capture all of my video from my DV camcorder and then save on to disc for later use. I guess I'm just weird that way.

I don't understand. MPEG 2 is a part of Vegas Video 3 - works fine with any PAID copy. All you have to do is register it separately (Why the separate register? I don't know).

That's what *I* thought too. I don't remember having to pay any seperate fees for it, only having to seperately register it....Did that change with the newer patch? (still haven't installed it myself)

Uhh...I don't remember paying for the MPEG codecs. Yes, you must register them separately but there was no cost involved. Am I missing something here?

Indeed... although I only own Vegas 2 (as soon as I have some extra $$$ I'm going to upgrade), I DISTINCTLY remember that the MPEG's were included once you register. I think that was SF's attempt at curbing piracy.

Yeah that's right whether you have 3.0 or 3.0c. It's just register the Encoder no fee. If you update from 3.0 to 3.0c you don't have to re-register either.

There is no extra cost for MPEG Encoding. It is a part of Vegas Video. The first time you use it you have to register it. This is becuase of the the licensing invovled with MPEG-2 encoding. SF is required to do this to account for the number of units out there so that they can pay the royalties to MC and the MPEGLA.

BTW, while the encoder is included with VV and SF pays the royalties for that, remember that if you sell DVD's or CD's with MPEG-2 encoded material on it YOU are liable for royalties to be paid to the patent holders for that disc.

Dont feel so bad about the little extra hassle of having to register, boys. A MAC afficianado friend of mine who purchased FinalCutPro, (bout a thousand smackers), also has to purchase the mpeg2 codec separately, if he wants to save mpeg2 files on his machine. In other words, it'll allow you to burn a DVD to mpeg2, but not save the file on your computer. Now that's weird, no ?

There is some sort of discrepancy here. Did you actually pay extra for the MainConcept MPEG CODEC? If so, why? Others, myself included, did not because, as you thought it should be, it was included as part of Vegas Video 3.

Hey guys,..it's me!! Just using my other username. Yes,..I must bow down in disgrace! You were right. All I had to do is register. I saw the prompt and I immediately jumped to conclusions!!! That being said,...I have no complaints! Registering twice? Aint no biggie! Just wanted to be man enough to admit my error!!
