What is the best tool for the job? I tried normalize and EQ, but neither seems to be that great. THanks in advance. Dave

I usually go with a mild compression, followed by some smooth/enhance (set to a medium smooth-- around 3 or so), finally delving into EQ if the rough patch is still rough. The graphic eq is endlessly customizable but that makes it a little hard to use well. p.s. Compression is likely to make your selected area louder, so if you decide to go with that, be prepared to normalize it down to a point where it matches the overall song volume.
