After I record a track, almost always the wav file is out of sync. It's late and out of sync by about 1/4 to 1/2 sec. I'm using win 200pro, CreativeLabs Live drive 5.1 I believe. I think i read that this sound card isn't the greatest for multi-track recording? I want to upgrade to the Audigy. Any thoughts?

Are you recording directly into ACID?

The second you hit the record button is the second that ACID starts recording. That means that unless you're bionically enhanced, you should trim the recorded audio with an external editor like Sound Forge or Sound Forge XP Studio (Sound Forge XP Studio comes free with ACID Pro). You could also offset the recording so it allows you to record right at the point where you want to do so. (Place the cursor a few bars before where you want to record.)

I am recording directly into ACID. I select a start position a couple bars before I want to start, then I hit record and wait to start playing my instrument. The track is late and out of sync (it's not me, I'm a professional musician with good timing etc.).

How long is the track in particular? If it's shorter than 30 seconds, ACID treats it like a loop. It might be because ACID is trying to ACIDize the recording. (For that reason alone I would always tweak in an external audio editor like Sound Forge.)

It could be the Soundblaster's drivers but it also might not be. Soundblasters are good but not great soundcards for the musician on the budget to begin with. (They're really noisy.) From what I've heard, the Audigy does not do true 24-bit/96 kHz audio; it still does 16-bit/48 kHz internally, which could spell trouble for those who want to do 24-bit/96 kHz.

Better off with offerings from M-Audio, Echo or Terratec (to name just a few). You might spend more money, but they're very much worth it. (I have an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 and an M-Audio USB Duo. I love both.) Once you get a taste of the audio quality of these cards, you might not ever go back.

The Creative cards do not permit the recording and playback to start synchronously. This will manifest itself as the newly record track being out of sync with the existing tracks.

Many pro or prosumer cards - Echo, Frontier Design, MIDIMan, etc - have the ability to synchronize the start of inputs and outputs such that they all start at exactly the same sample position.
