Subject:echo-like conversion from WAV to 12kbs mp3

I have a nice WAV file of voice. I try to save to mp3, at 12kbs, I can hear the voice but it is not so clear and it has a smeary echo in it. ANy suggestions?

i have sound forge 4.5. by the way, am using windows 2000

12Kbps may simply be too low a bitrate for your tastes. I usually encode speaking at 16Kbps, but i've gotten usable (if somewhat distorted) results as low as 8.5Kbps. It mostly depends on what you consider acceptable. Making sure the Quality slider is all the way to the right at Highest quality sound is particularly important when using low bitrates.

The quality slider is all the way to max.

If I were to convert this wave to Real Media (using real producer), even at 6.5kbs, I would have a better sounding audio, and without the echo...

Maybe this is what I should expect for mp3...

Dave, i have to agree with you there. At very low bit rates Real beats the pants off anyone else. Too bad their new player is such a monster. *sigh*
