Subject:Sound Forge 5 crashes in Windows 2000

I've been using Sound Forge 5 (build 117) for quite some time. When I switched to Windows 2000 it stopped working properly. After my first install of Sound Forge, it would shut down immediately after the splash screen loaded. After reinstalling it, the program works until I start trying to edit a wave with it. I can record and open files, but when I start cutting and pasting the program dies. Any ideas? Thanks.

Did you load DX8.1 for Win2k?

George,

Try this: 1) Be sure your Win2K install has SP2 installed and all the patches, 2) Install DirectX 8.1 - after you've done that, use the Direct X Troubleshooting Tool to run a complete check on DirectX and make sure no errors are found, 3) Be sure your sound card drivers are up to date. Last but not least: you are using an old build of SF5: go to the download area and download the SF5.0F (Build 259) update. Yes, I know it is a big file (on a 56K dialup it took me 93 minutes to download it) but it IS worth it. BTW, before you re-installed SF you did completely uninstall it and clean up the Registry? I'm not knocking Sonic Foundry, but SF is real picky about have "debris" laying around: not as bad as Adobe products but I've found I've had problems if I don't follow proper procedures when installing SF (not just V5 but previous versions as well).
Do that and check back in and tell us the results.

Regards,
Bill Bowen
