Subject:Is ACID the best looping software around?

I was wondering what people's opinions were as to the best looping software avaiable. I want to get something to start with electronic music production, but I'm not sure which program would give me the best results for the investment. I already have Sound Forge and Vegas, so I don't know if that would make ACID any more appealing. The ACID Techno program looks kinda cheap, but I don't know if that just means that it's a good deal. I also checked out Fruity Loops. Are there any others I should be aware of? BTW, cost is an important factor (less = better), but not at the expense of quality and versatility.

It would be really one-sided of me to say so since I use ACID Pro, but that's practically the best option.

It's pricey, yes, but when you consider it's the only version of ACID that can do 24-bit, allows exporting of loops, let's you save each track in a project as a separate file, Get Media exclusives for registered ACID Pro users, etc., it pays for itself.

For a complete comparison, check this page out if you haven't done so already.

There is a good review of looping tools in the June 2002 issue of Electronic Musician.

ACID wins....

Was Sonar2 included? Just investigating getting it, so I wondered why Acid Pro would win.

I happen to use both SONAR 2.0 & ACID Pro 3.0. I have found that as a pure loop arranging tool, ACID Pro 3.0, is still the easiest, most intuitive and comprehensive program available. Sonic Foundry still rules in that department. Where SONAR 2.0 shines though, is taking the loop arranging concept a step further and integrating digital audio multitracking, extensive MIDI editing and the use of virtual instruments (DXi/VSTi w/ adapter)into a cohesive and comprehensive music making tool.
There are still a couple things that SONAR can do with loops that ACID can't. Like the ability to preview multiple loops at the same time, which is nice. But ACID Pro is the program I turn to when I am in a loop arranging mood. I would like to see what improvements and enhancements await ACID 4.0. Unless it is a real dog, I will probably upgrade as soon as it is available. If anything else, just to stay with the current technology. ACID is still a worthwhile tool to have and remains one of my favorite music software programs.

I own Acid 3.0 and Sonar XL 1.3.1, Im holding out to see what Acid 4 will have before upgrading to Sonar 2.0. I sill do most of my work in Acid because it is so much easier for me to get the job done.I like the interface. If Acid 4 has Softsynths like DXi or VSTi, DX/VST automation, better midi, I will be shoving to get to the front of the line to download Acid 4.0 !

With fingers crossed 8-D!

ACID is ACID. SONAR is SONAR.

Read the article. Each tool they cover has its merits. For pure Looping, ACID wins - it is still what the others are trying to do.

No doubt, for pure loop arranging, ACID is the best!

If I'm looking for a good quality looping program to create techno-style music, would it be worth the extra $30 to get ACID Music, or would ACID Techno suit my needs? I read the comparison chart, and ACID Pro seems a little bit overboard for me, especially since I already have SoundForge and Vegas. Basically, what kind of things would I get in ACID Music that I wouldn't get in ACID Techno? BTW, thanks for all the advice before; you talked me out of Fruity Loops (and hopefully saved me money, too, since I won't end up buying two or three programs before I find the one I actually wanted from the start).

A major requirement for me is 24 bit cabability. I think Acid Pro 3 is the only version that currently handles 24 bit.

Anyone know if there is any difference in the way the two programs work? For some reason I had always assumed Acid stretching was DSP-based but I just read an article about Sonar Groove Clips being based on rearranging beat-divisiaon markers saved with the file a la Recycle.

Hmmm, sorry if this is a daft question.

I think 16-bit would be okay. I do digital recording work using 16-bit, and i haven't run into any problems.

The main advantages ACID Music has over Techno is track-level FX, CD burning/extraction and ripple editing.

While at first glance it may look like ACID Pro might be a little too much for what you're looking for, you might never know if you'll ever need any of those features that are exclusive to ACID Pro at some point.

For example, what if, by any chance, you liked what you were compiling together in ACID for a music bed but wanted to keep the tracks separate so that you could work on them in either Sound Forge or Vegas on an independent basis? ACID Pro is the only version of ACID that will let you export/save tracks in a project in their complete, processed form (i.e., any FX, envelopes, etc.) separately for manipulation in another program. Both ACID Music and ACID Techno do not have this feature.

Combined with both Sound Forge and Vegas, and you have a practically unstoppable digital audio software studio.

Can someone explain what you get from the "media exclusives"?
I have seen that mention before...just wondering if it's some sort of loop database that acid pro users can download for free, if yes How much loops are in there? in all styles of music?

Thank you for your help.

Each month, Sonic Foundry posts an assortment of content for registered ACID Pro users. Mostly, this content consists of loops that are a Get Media exclusive, which means that they are not available on the CD or collection on the artist they feature. They also feature samples and video clips from other content providers like Videometry and SoundRangers.

This month's loops feature those from Bill Laswell (24-bit loops!), Mick Fleetwood, and Leo Cavallo. Past features were loops from the authors of the Machine Language (Jon Drukman) and Cinematix (Groove Addicts) collections.

They usually are about ten loops in each loop pack. Usually, there are two loop packs for each featured artist.

They're free, but once they're gone, they're gone. There's no way to "catch up" on past Get Media exclusives, so it'd be wise to get them as soon as one can and burn them to CD.

I wish either Acid would catch up, or cubase would be easier with looping (yes .. Cubase SX indeed has looping!!!!)
