What are the best process's and plugins to use when recording a LP and turning it into CD. I want to get the ultimum output with the least amount of noise. |

For a good Lp to CD transfer, you should first have a goo turntable/tone arm and a good cartridge proberly set up. Use good patch cables and a good, quiet soundcard. These are all very general, even vauge suggestions. You could start by listing what you are using. The point is that to be successful at restoring an LP, you should start out with the best sound you can get. SF, along with the Noise Reduction plug-in, you have all the tools you need to get good sound into your CD-Rs. |

My suggestion is to clean your vinyl before you begin. I personally like to use 'Gruv Glide', but any good quality record cleaning solution would do. Get all dust, dirt, lint, etc. off the vinyl since this is normally what causes vinyl to deterorate(sp?) in the first place. Use the past suggestion as far as a good turntable and good cartridge. Here is a my setup (it's a pro-setup and many of the pieces are expensive.) Technic 1200's into my Denon X400 (I love this mixer!!) Out of my mixer (via the Tape Out ports) I have a Y connector that takes the L & R signals and combines them into a 1.5" stereo headphone plug. This then plugs into my Sound Card. (Roland Pro EMU1200 ISA) sound card. (I don't think you can get this anymore... $450.00 back in the day 4-5 years ago. Old, but the sound quality rocks!!) I then use Sound Forge to record the songs. I then make any edits, run NR if necessary and then save to a .wav file. Burn to a CD and now you have your tracks on CD. Once you have your setup complete, it's easy as pie. (Just watch your hard drive space. When working with 16bit-44.1KHz files, each minute of audio is about 10MB.) I hope this helps you out!! |

Dcomo - you seem to have the right knowledge for my problem - which is feedback/hum in my Lp (amp) to PC setup. I have (don't laugh) a low grade turn table running through a Sony A/V reciever (150W per channel output) and am using a Y cable to bring it into my sound card (Creative Sound Blaster Live! MP3+). So, I am not sure where to start to isolate the source of the FEED back. I get this low hum that I can't remove and would prefer to fix the problem rather than use NR to try to get it right. Any thoughts...Oh, WinXP, 512 Mg 133 ram, 80 gigs, PIII 733, Altec 3 speaker/sub woofer setup (which sound greatfor all other uses /CD/Games/General PC sounds - no distortion or hum)... |

Have you tried grounding your turntable? There is usually an additional grounding wire coming from the turntable. I ground mine to my preamp. Hum gone. Grounding to your Sony A/V receiver should do it. |

In addition to the other good advise, make sure you use a Phono pre-amp, as it has the correct RIAA EQ curve for vinyl records. |
