If you want to do video editing, run away from the Dell Movie Studio Bundle, and yes, SCREAMING is appropriate!

I'm sure lots of people in here, especially Grazie in the Video Factory forum will more than happily give you many earfuls of horror stories about Movie Studio. Most of them have ditched all the components (and without a refund to boot) and had to purchase new hardware in order to get any useful results at all.

Get a nice generic system, no fancy video card needed unless you play lots of 3D games or want to work with dual monitors. Make sure it has an OHCI compliant 1394 interface card. If your DV camcorder has analog->DV passthrough you're all set. If not, you may want to look at something like the Canopus ADVC-100 external converter which converts analog audio/video to DV and back. The camcorder or ADVC will also be used to monitor your video on a television or print it to tape.

Thanks for the reply. My camcorder is a sony vx1000. I see in the compatible hardware list, the sony vx2000 is mentioned. I hope the VX1000 will work.

Which firewire card would you recommend?

Hi Nanette,
I do have the cheapest I could get (in Australia)and have no problems. It serves my camera and DVD burner flowlessly. Might be a good idea to get one with "Windows compatible" logo.

go to pricewatch.com, and clk on the serial controller card category. I've purchased three different types, non over $20, and they all worked fine.. Dont buy an Ads Pyro, you'll just be spending $25 extra for unneeded software.BTW, vegas runs just fine on my 800mhz celeron rig, so you shouldn't have any problem with any current machine.

Nanette, I have a Siig card that I got at CompUsa for $40 (cable included).

FYI, the Dell package that you should stay away from is packaged with the VideoWave software.
Go to:

and take a look for posts about Dell. Alot of people seemed to get duped by Dell and the Movie Studio package.

Quick comment. Get a second hard drive. A 20-40gb one to make your C: drive with the O/S and programs and stuff on it. Then use the 80 gb drive for all of your media. You will see an improvement in performance that way without a lot of bucks.

You're letting people know it works on your system without problems. Editing and rendering to a single hard drive isn't really a issue. I don't recall anyone reporting issues with either of those things. Printing to tape and capturing on a single drive system MAY present some problems for some people with some cameras as some posters reported.

You're telling us you get full frame rate of 29.97 in the preview window with 40-50 video tracks? Using what system?

Hi Nanette,
Get a OHCI compliant 1394 interface card (fire wire) check out the allinwonder Radeon from ATI wich is a great allaround VDO card for what you'll do. And you might want to have lots of hard drive space. And please stay away from Branded PC you'll get the same quality from a custom build with the possibility to upgrade.

I've been having trouble keeping my VX1000 connected. My PC9 camera works fine with device control, but the VX1000 will connect and then crap out after a few minutes... systems says it isn't there. If I load up Premiere 6 for capture, Premiere capture says it is offline, then I unplug and replug in the firewire cable from the VX1000, Premiere finds it and then Vegas can control the VX1000 indefinitely. There must be some search/initialization that Premiere 6 capture uses that finds and locks in the VX1000. Anyone else have similar experiences? I'm using win2k with an Asus CUSL-2 1ghz Piii, 512mb ram, and Promise RAIDS. Capture card is WD using MS drivers.

I have found not a speed performance improvement but an improvement in the occasional stutters or clicks in audio. With the system on a seperate drive it appears that when Windoze writes to or reads from the swap files the occasional click in the audio (BTW only during preview not render) and the stutter with video disappear.

I Know of a couple of other people that says their system does not
recognise their vx1000. I don't know if drivers are not availble, or
what.

Good luck,
