Subject:Opening *.wav files from multiple CD's in soundforge 6.0, it was possible in 5 but not in 6.0.

I bet no one at soundforge ever uses more than one file to edit at a time. I use SF for doing everything, recording multiple takes, adding stuff from CD's and mixing it down to a final track. This means I can have more than 20 files open at a given time, from multiple different sources.

Now 6.0 introduces a nice new problem to my way of working. If you take multiple files from multiple CD's. The moment you open a file from the second CD SF can no longer find the files from the first, and thus deletes the data in the windows of the files already opened.

Even if you copy paste the opened 'read only' tracks into new files (ctrl-e) it still keeps links and empties the windows when it no longer finds the first CD in the drive, you cannot even do anything about it.

It must have something to do with the non destructive editing, but surely, thinking about how people could use an application is the first step in designing software? Isn't it fairly common to back stuff up to CD for later use? And with wav files easily running into 100's of MB's isn't also a given to easily exceed the 640 mb storage limit of one disc?

Hopefully this can somehow be fixed in a next version because I cannot burn everything to disc as a backup and a ways to save on prescious hard disc space, only to copy it all back again if I want to work on these files.

Perhaps an option like in sf 5.0 where you could CHOOSE to directly work on a file or open it as a copy. Or, have soundforge recognize that a file is opened from A CD and thus not try and maintain links to removable media.

It all comes down to a major grype I have with software companies, where in a new version, all of a sudden functions are changed, like for insance the graphic fader no longer displaying waveforms, jeez, thanks for that. I need 5.0 just to do graphic fades.

Adobe does this all the time, get a new version of photoshop, play a game of search where they put the function this time. Sure the new location and use IS usually more logical, but not to old users. You know, those people that went out and actually BOUGHT the program prior to this version, helping fund this version.

I don't want to be all negative here, and do appologize for going into a little rant. I do love what soundforge does and it's the best addition to my studio.

But please ensure that you don't take away functionality when introducing new features. That should be a prime directive, the program should always remain transparent.

And if something does have to go, include it in the list of changes. If something is changed, removed or replaced tell us and also let us know how old users can work around these. But better yet, make sure old users can install something and continue exactly the way they used to, that's what good software, in my eyes, should do.
