I have a recording of Beethoven's 7th Symphony and need to remove all the music except for the triangle and 3rd violins. Can you tell me how to do this with Sound Forge.
Many thanks
Weka

This should be no problem using SF6. This new option is located under the "Tools" menu. For the triangle just use the "Triangle band pass filter" preset, and this will get rid of everything, but the Triangle sound. It will be a little more difficult with the "3rd violins". Under the same menu, there is only a preset for "1st violins filter" , so you will need to start with this preset and do a little tweaking. Try to add a pitch shift of half an octave, which should put you right in the 3rd violin frequency range, and see how that works for you.

Or....Kill all the Orchestra members except the triangle and 3rd violin player.

I have the original recording. All the instruments are in separate wave files. Give me your e-mail adress and I'll send it to you. I also have some original DV footage where you see Beethoven clowning around with that triangle. If you want I'll send you both and you can make a nice little "montage" using Vegas Video 4.0 (Oops, I wasn't supposed to say I already had 4.0, sorry SF).

Thanks all, works well. Isn't technology fabulous! Reductionist Composition. I think I'll start a school of Componistic Reductionism and set up on the left-bank in Paris.
Still there's this damnable woman 3 rows back snoring during the Allegretto.

You'll have to purchase the new version of the Sonic Foundry noise reduction plugin when it get's released. In there, they've promised to have a "De-snorer" preset, which not only removes any background snoring but, is guaranteed to wake your mixes right up and give them more of a lively feel.

Fosko, Of course this can be done, just refer to the FAQ section and see item #6.

I still like using my Vegas installation better for this. Very simple. Just point & click.

Lol Chien, I see there's been an update in the last release. Will the ever infamous "Glockenspiel" be supported in the next Vegas removal update? Nothing makes a hit record without a Glockenspiel solo, has always been my production advice.

Red, what you don't see there is the dialog box that lets you add new instruments, ala the impulses used in Acoustic Mirror. So just build up your own library. Personally i think a Glockenspiel & Ocarina duet would be heavenly.

Ooops, my bad!! I guess I better get back to reading this latest manual and catch up on my technology curve before showing my lack of experience using vegas :-)

OK
You guys are really ticking me off...
When I purchased SF I was told there was a feature that would AUTOMATICALLY remove offensive words from Rapp music.

I was also informed that with some tweaking, this feature could make the Blues sound happy, automaically Master my recordings for me, and whitten my teeth.

I tried Cheins preset and not only did it crash my system...but when I rebooted the Orchestra was playing an octave faster.

Where is my Sonic Satisfaction ???

Watch out for the teeth whitener plug-in, I pushed it too hard and clipped my master output and it gave me a root canal.

"I tried Cheins preset and not only did it crash my system...but when I rebooted the Orchestra was playing an octave faster."

SF is aware of this and they are working on an update. This seems to happen whether one is using a P4 or a Commodore 64. A workaround for now is to reboot and work in safemode. Make sure you have all the latest drivers for all your equipment. I thought I had them all updated, but it was still crashing the system. I proceeded to fire my LIMO driver and hired a new one... no more crashes. So, when SF advises you to update ALL your drivers, make sure you update them all. I'm still getting stuttering on playback, so I'm heading for my golfbag next!

I think there's a bug in the teeth whitener plugin, maybe some sort of audio steering problem. I spent hours doing sessions with this plugin and the only thing it whitened was my hair. Can anyone repro this bug? Sofo, when will there be an update to address this issue?

Sorry about that. I developed and tested the plugin in 65816 code on my old Apple //gs. I guess i should have QA do some testing on other platforms.

I heard of a plug-in that allows you to separate the musician from the instrument...

psssssst. Tom, just checking ... you do realize this entire thread has been satire, right? ;)

Satire, what are you talking about? It's in my menu items. You might want to try reinstalling SF6 and see if it reappears, and if that don't help then post a Bug report to the Sonic Foundry tech support.

Thanks .. I'll check ...
So it's under "Tools" --> "Filter.." ??????

I have SF6 try&buy installed on my laptop, but have the full version (with serial no) installed on my editing system at home. I was looking under "Tools" on the trial version.

Cheers,
Tom

PAUNTZ..
to get that feature I think you'll need the new SOUND FOURGE PLATINUM X. Contact Sonic Foundry or your local dealer for details.

Just a note..
SF Platinum X comes bundled with a free copy of Cubase and Sonar.

"SF Platinum X comes bundled with a free copy of Cubase and Sonar"

That would explain the 1500$ price tag. They may SAY it's free, but you pay for it in the end.
Also, the advantage with Platinum X is it will also run on MAC.

Don't bother trying to deny it Ted, I've just been to the Sonar forum and they mention a Sonar/Cubase/PlatinumX as an upcoming product.
Now, I hope that with the hefty pricetag, you guys will offer some bonus to go with the puchase...say a Sonic Foundry baseball cap. Or, better yet a free Sonic Foundry coaster for my coffee mug at my workstation.

Hang on, this is a trick question isn't it?

There are no third violins or triangle in Beethoven's 7th. :-)

This is SO cool!!
Way to go Chien!!

I think, however, that you need to post on that thread to clear things up. You have to tell these people that the vocal remover is a 199$ extra-cost plug-in. After all, you don't want them buying VV3 thinking that it removes vocals WITHOUT the plug-in.

Let it be known that it was Chien who started it all, when I start replying to POed users whining about how "They Heard" Vegas could remove vocals, and then I have to tell them what a pathetic loser they really are. :-)

Hi!... i have a Time Machine, so if anybody needs to record something separatly, we can go back in time and ask Beethoven. We can leave him a copy, so he can listen the new track final render (he's still using V2)
PS: i wrote this message tomorrow, if anybody ask...

Too late - just come back from there. He's sawn the legs off his pianos and can't hear anything over 200hz. But I tell you what thought, I'd sell my soul for the rights to his up-and-coming. The 32 piano sonata opus 111. It's gonna be a smash.
(tell them old Weka told ya so)
