I'm wondering what the current consensus is whether the upgrade from SF 5 to 6 is worth it? I've seen both positive and negative posts here but I thought it'd be interesting to check this out on one post. At least it'd be helpful for me as I'm considering the upgrade but certainly can wait for more updates/fixes if its still too buggy. Thanks! drbam |

The bugs are definitely there and some are large critters. On one of my machines, I can't rip audio...I get an instantaneous crash/reboot (windows XP). On a different machine (also XP) it works fine. If it weren't for the fact that so many others had the same problem, I would start to get paranoid. Having said that, 6.0 is nice also so I have it loaded on the machine where it works and 5.0 on the other. 5.0 was also nice (IMO), so if it does what you want you may want to wait for some bug fixes. |

I upgraded primarily to get the Noise Reduction bundle and also because editing is much faster. So far it works very well on my computer. |

To me Yes It is much faster than 4.5 or 5.0 and you have a new Audio plugin chainer, New Plugin Mgr. Preset Mgr. In never had a problem with ripping or burning audio on my Yamaha 24x10x40 or My Sony DVD+RW. Plays well with Vegas Video 3, Acid Pro 3, Sonar 1.3.1 and Plugins from Waves, TC, Timeworks, Cakewalk, PSP, Izotope, Arboretum, Steinberg DX, Opcode, Q-Sound Labs, RBC, Wave Arts oh yea Sonic Foundry. I already had NR 2.0 but still worth the upgrade. Always try the demo before you buy ANYTHING! PS. that was on P3/4 Win98se & Win2k George |

I'm with George. I didn't upgrade to 5.0 because it was so slow. 6.0 has an interface more like VV, so it's easier to opertate, MUCH faster and more streamlined with the plugin manager/chainer. I love it. |

It's a good deal with the NR-2 plug-in. 6.0 is a lot faster than 4.5 and 5... especially if your dealing with large files. It has a few bugs that don't seem to be to serious. But it doesn't have CD-A (and that sucks) and CD-A will not work on 5.0 or 6.0 .... so I keep 4.5 for that. |

I have been using SF 6.0 for about 3 days in actuall editing sessions for an upcoming CD and also for an Acid loop library. I have so far experienced 0 bugs. Rarely do I get excited about a software release like I have been over SF 6.0. It is lightning fast and very custamizable to a person's individual work habbits. I am able to bounce back and forth from Vegas and make edits in 1/5 of the time it used to take me. In a world dealing with limited time and discerning clients, that is well worth it!!! (ps I still use SF 4.5/CD architect for critical cd authoring as it is untouchable still) |

Its very fast and nice and I haven't seen any bugs so far (PIII 550 in 200) but I still use SF4.0 or 4.5 for (to use the earlier version of NR plugin) the find click func as I have to do a lot of restoration from LPs. I really think they should include automatic single click fine func with manual remove option in later versions of the software or NR plugin... |

is it hell ! 2 versions down the line its still behind the competition all it is is a little faster due to the non destrucuctive nature but vegas has this feature for for over two years if you have vegas dont go for it as it probably does much more than sf 6 stick to 4.5 and vegas it all seems to me anyway that acid and and sf in all of sfs big apps are a variation of vegas if you have any of them look and try and spot the difference very lazy programming! acid was a leading product once now its two years off the mark and it doesnt even work for most people as well as v2 did the only people who dont find bugs in recent sf apps are the ones that dont drive them in hard pro environ i would love to say different i suggest u try other editors virtually all of them, do more than sf6 and have done for some time the soft synth revolution plus true real time acess to plugin parameters seems to have passed sf by too busy playing with videos if sf are not interested in music software say so but please stop trying to palm people off with new apps that are only really chasing the tails of other more advanced apps non destructive editing is not new ! sf6 worth it not on your life sorry about the rant (its an honest view clouded only by ineffectual products ) |

So, I am also interested in SF6 to get NR bundle also. But since I am running XP, the only posts seem to say that it will not work due to bugs. (No matter what SF sales people will say). You people who are happy with SF6, any XP'ers out there? Thanks |

I'm one of the ones with critter (bug) problems. Both of the computers I have are running XP...it works fine on one (very nice), and on the other I get supersonic crashes and reboots whenever I try to rip audio. It may have other problems but when the first problem arose, I removed it from that machine...so I don't know. |

IMHO...YES! The only thing that I can say that is missing in SF6 is DAO burning like in Vegas. I've looked into upgrading my copy of wavelab to version 4 and can't find a reason to fork over the funds when I have SF6a. I'm using a pentium 3,6oomhz, with XP pro with nothing to complain about so far.[KNOCK ON WOOD!!!] If people feel that SF6 is soooo under powered then why didn't everybody bitch and write a "wishlist" for the next version like was done for Vegas and Acid. I can hardly wait to see what was done for the next version of ACID 4. And there is NO EXCUSE for the next version of Vegas to have a SHITTY audio upgrade. Do a search and read all the suggestions that were given to either. I for one want to say THANKYOU to the SF6 development team for adding the F11 screen management feature to SF6. I didn't think it was going to get done and they have met my expectations and then some!!! All in all I didn't have much to bitch about to begin with version 5...Version 6 STILL has no DAO but that just means I do a quick jump over to vegas to finish the job...I would rather not have to do this in the NEXT VERSION...HINT...HINT!!! If you want something like having the ability to open up a DXi in SF7 and be able to record audio to be used as a acid loop or what have you start a SF7 wishlist! I'm curious to know what everybody else is missing in their workflow with SF6. I for one can't complain...much :) . Later. |

Thanks to everyone who replied so far. Your comments (pro & con) have been really helpful. Mainly because of the promo price, I decided to go with the upgrade to 6.0. I have been interested in other editing apps, especially Wavelab, but there's no way I can justify spending the extra $. SF has been a good product for my work (so far) and other than the usual gripes (discontinuing CDA, no DAO, etc) I'm pretty happy with it. I worked with 6 for the first time yesterday, and was shocked at how much faster it is! Wow, what a nice change from the previous experiences. drbam |
