i am working on a project where we need to use 8 bit 16k mono samples because of the limitations of hardaware chips.. I have tried to record at the given sampling freq./rate but there is some induces sounds/distortion/hiss. Is it possible to get reasonable quality sound at the given sampling-rate? I mean sound without any apparent disturbance/distortion |

...I believe "system sounds" in windows are like 11k or 12k, and they sound OK so it must be possible. |

thank you for you reply...maybe I did not make it clear but the sampling rate is not a problem... I am having problems with the bit depth... I just checked some "system sounds" and they are all recorded at 16 bit...I have to record or convert to 8 bit.... |

I would record in 16 bit, then apply some compression and normalization to keep the signal relatively loud and constant. Then save it as an 8 bit file. The major loss with 8 bits is dynamic range. When you save as 8 bit, the bottom 8 bits are lost and these bits contain information for the very quiet parts of the sound. By compressing and normalizing you will make sure the most of the important information is contained in the top 8 bits and will be preserved. http://bin.askocorp.com/askosound/newsound.html The WAV files listed on this page are 8 bit, produced using the method outlined above. Compression settings will depend entirely on the sound file you're working on. In this case, your goal is simply to eliminate peaks that would keep the rest of the file from being brought up to a high level when normalized. Look for a dB level that cuts off most of the peaks but doesn't touch the main "body" of the wave form. Once you've got the peaks eliminated, then the whole file will normalize to a high level. |

Technically speaking, there is no recording regardless of the number of bits which will be without distortion. Anytime you go from an analog signal to a digital signal there will always be distortion added, the amount will vary from system to system and bit depth. |
