Everytime I try to extract audio from CD in SF 6.0a, my system shuts down immediately and reboots. I've e-mailed support for an explanation/answer/fix...but no reply. Can anybody tell me what this is all about? Is there something I'm doing here wrong? Is there a fix? |

CD "auto-insert notification' turned off ? What is the CD drive - maybe it doesn't support DAE ? |

Geoff, thanks for the reply. It's an HP CD writer and it worked fine with SF 5.0. Can you explain the "auto insert notification turned off" thing? This thing is freaking me out and I'm starting to think about going back to 5.0 and taking my lumps (so much for the upgrade). |

Dave...it's XP. The computer has never so much as burped since I got it when XP first came out. There's plenty of system power (P4 @1.7, 80gig/7200RPM HD, 512 megs of ram yada yada. SF V6 is a nice up, but this kind of thing really puts a damper on the party. Now, along with everything else, I got people "I told you so-ing" me that I should have bailed and just got Wavelab. If I can't get this thing working, I'm gonna ask Sonic Foundry for a refund on the upgrade. |

I'm confussed about the auto insert notification also. Is Geoff referring to Autorun? If so, and if it's any help you can temporarily disable it by press and holding the <Shift> key whilst loading the CD. |

Great tip! This saves me from going through the hoops... so simple! This is why I read all the posts! Thanks! RiRo |

I'll try holding <shift> while I load the CD and then extracting the audio. I'll post back again tommorrow if it works. |

Just out of curiosity, what other devices are on your system? Internal or external CD burner make/model? Do you have a USB smart media/compact flash reader installed? Thanks, Kevin |

Kevin, the system has an internal HP CD writer as well as a smart media reader/writer. Although, uninstalling the smart media reader/writer has no effect ...so far. Is there something there I should be doing? As I said in an earlier post, I have another similar computer (at least spec-wise, but built for me by a local supplier using a nobilis case) that has no problems with SF6...in fact the program runs great on that one. |

Are you using the same smart media reader/writer on the other system (the one on which Forge 6 is running okay)? Can you give us some specs on the device and its driver version? At what point are you removing the reader/writer? Is Forge already running, or are you removing the device and then starting Forge? Are you using the Unplug/Eject Hardware icon in the system tray to remove the device? Thanks for hanging in there with us--sorry for the inconvenience, -Kevin |

Kevin, thanks for all your interest (some OTHER companies might want to take note). The device is a Delkin eFilm Reader-14, USB Port SmartMedia Reader (part no. DDREADER-14). I tried getting more from "properties" but nothing comes up there. I tried uninstalling the thing before opening SF6, then I open SF6 and try to extract audio and get a really nice, blindingly fast crash/reboot...hey I just got an idea for the e-olympics :) Maybe I need to do a more thorough uninstall or something, since it seems like you're leaning to an incompatibility issue between this device and SF6. Everything works fine under SF5 though, and I haven't seen others here confirm that they have installed similar devices. I am not a big-time computer guy, and don't like the idea of digging into the OS however, as someone else mentioned. I would appreciate any advice here, as I'm sure would others. SF6 is really nice though, which makes it even more frustrating. For now, I have SF5 & 6 installed on this PC and just SF6 on the other since it seems that after storing any audio ripped from a CD as a .wav (or any other filetype), SF6 has no problem digesting the data. |
