i am brand new to recording software and using a combination of soundforge 5 and acidpro 3 for creating predominantly loop-based tunes. hopefully this isn't too dumb of a question.

are there any rules of thumb for recording low-end instruments such as bass guitar (i've been going straight into the soundcard instead of mic) and bass drum kicks in terms of eqing, effecting, etc? i have been recording directly into soundforge. i'm not sure if this is where my problem is, but i've already damaged a set of home stereo speakers that i use for playback, and my hunch is that the bottom end is causing this. any help is appreciated.

When you connect to the sound card, are you connecting to the line input or the mic input? Guitar pickups put out a level that is too high for microphone inputs. You'll get lots of loud distortion unless you use the line input.

try using the mic at the Bass and Bass Drum( it gives you a natural sound ), about the speakers (work with a small level at the output) and use some real monitors like Yamaha or Allesis Monitor One.

The bass output may be a bit low level for the soundcard line in, and unless it is an 'active' bass, the impedence of the soundcard input will be too low.

A built-in mic preamp on a soundcard is unlikely to be very high quality, especially at low frequency. What mic and sondcard are you using ? An external preamp (maybe mini-mixer) may be required.

EQing - you may need drastic EQing to get the sound you want, and compression too. Usually some low bass needed for thump, and some higher frequency boost if you want a 'clicky' sound.

Electronic Musician has a article on micing kick drums in the July edition which you may find helpful or amusing. http://www.emusician.com .
