Subject:SF6a und Direct Mode - this is impossible

Hi,

We are now using SF in the 6er generation and I can not believe that they take out the Direct Mode stuff. What do they think. We are working with sound files greater than 1.5 GB. Have you stopped the time and space that you nee now in SF6a working with this large files. You need the double of space and a lot of more time. I can not believe this. If the function isn't coming back we stop our work with SF6 and switching to another product. Upgrade from 5 to 6 no way without Direct Mode.

You can stop the Temp file from opening by hitting cansel on the upper load bar, after initializing a file to open. I'm not sure if this puts it in direct, or what concequences it could cause besides no back-up if a crash occurs. It just opens an existing file fast which I use somtimes for playback only.

I have never had the need to work in direct mode, so maybe there's something I'm missing? The primary upgrade to 6.0 was the ability of non-destructive editing, to make things quicker when doing many edits, instead of having to write to the hardrive after every process. If you are working in direct mode, then you're really not doing non-destructive editing. So this seems only logical to me that direct mode wouldn't be available in 6.0 with non-destructive editing.

As far as size goes, hard drives are pretty in-expensive now. I think you can pick up a 60gig for about $75. 3gig out of 60, you still have plenty of space left. I still remember when I first started mastering and we had a huge 1 gig audio hard drive, which cost $600. Now, if that was still the case, you would hear me complaining too about having to double the hard drive space for opening a file.

Maybe there's a way to have direct mode and non-destructive editing so that everyone's happy?
