Try VREMOVER from www.analogx.com . It does as well as can be, for the most part good enough for Karaoke. And it's a freebie !

The generic term for these devices is "center canceller", and they do just that. Since the vocal is usually dead center in the stereo field, this removes more or less of the vocal, depending on the mix and any stereo effects. They usually wreak havoc with the rest of the song as well. The best advice was from Chienworks who said "it can't be done". Your trying to remove one element from a project that has been mixed, it's sort of like trying to remove the milk from a milkshake...you might be able to accomplish something but what's left wouldn't be worth tasting.

Well don't say that without trying the free DX plug I suggested (or others). I think you will agree that it does surprising well, and doesn't totally wreck the rest of the music, even retaining substanial centre bass info.

Do try it, and let us know back here. If nothing else, just to let me know if I was imagining what I heard, or not.

I tried it and the result was not good. An awful lot of bleed through.
Kareoke CDs must be pretty cheap now?!? Why bother with this method?
Try this... Invite a whole bunch of your friends over one night, and play the "home made kareoke" CD. Then ask them " What do you guys think of what I did to this song?"
If you are at all embarrassed to ask that question, you know the result was not worth the effort.

I did do some with VREMOVER for a big-time karaoke enthusiast (owns 150 commercial Karaoke library CDs - OK, it take all sorts) and he seemed pretty impressed....

So, if people try it and it lives up to their expectations, great. If it doesn't, well, they're stuffed. But they should try it before deciding.

Why anyone without talent would want to go in front of total strangers and make a fool out of one's self is beyond me! Kareoke, indeed!

beetlefan:
There's a substance known in my town as Alchohol. It comes in the form of drinkable beverages. Some of these beverages are known as "beer", "whiskey", "coktails", "mixed drinks", "daiquiris", and many others. If you do not want to get up with a lack of talent and sing like a fool in front of strangers, avoid beverages such as these at all costs.
