Subject:Need help with MIDI and Acid/tried to RTFM/still lost

Hello everyone, anyone,

I would like to try to use some of the MIDI features in Acid with my Roland XP-80 keyboard. I'm hoping to find someone who would be willing to explain this to me as if I were a child, because when it comes to MIDI I am a complete looser. I understand the basic idea that one instrument triggers another and that it is code and not sounds which are transmitted. That's about it. I have tried my Roland manual, the Acid manual and various online tutorials, but sorry, I just don't understand how to make this work. I did install the virtual midi router, but I'm not even sure that's necessary. Anyway, here's what I would like to do, and I don't even know if it's possible. I have an Acid project that I would like to put a piano solo on. If I sequence it with the keyboard, is there any way to sync it with the acid project via midi? Sorry to be so lame here, but that's just where I'm at. In lieu of someone coaching me on this, could someone please point me to something that explains how to do this in a simple way? I feel like such a fool. Maybe I can return the favor about something else. Thanks.

try recording your piano solo in a midi sequencer and save it as a .mid (midi file). now you can import the midi file into acid and select your piano program for playback under track properties. not sure if you record midi directly into acid, haven't tried that myself, but you will be able to import the midi file. good luck!

What you're referring to is MIDI sync. Click here to research more on that issue.

Since you just want to record your playing with the Roland (if I understood this correctly), I'd suggest either recording MIDI directly into ACID or using another MIDI sequencing program per ramone's suggestion and bring the MIDI track into ACID. Even better, if your Roland has audio outputs (and I'm sure it does), think about connecting it to your soundcard and recording digital audio that way.

(BTW, ACID Pro is the only version of ACID that will let you record MIDI. All the other versions will only let you playback MIDI.)

HTH,
Iacobus

Thank you everyone. You people are so nice and helpful. I still am trying to figure out how to configure things, but I'm headed in the right direction thanks to you guys. MIDI is new and still a mystery to me.
