John Madden Drawings on Video?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the alpha channel info last time... greatly appreciate it....enormous help!!
Regarding the alpha channel idea, is there a simple way to add hand-drawn or graphics program rendered "John Madden-esc" arrows, circles, etc. to a video - much as John scribbled on video replay segments in his day? This would be an awesome capability for instruction on video to highlight and emphasize key points. Any help as always is tremendously appreciated!!

Thanks in advance!

Steve M.

I've always thought wouldn't it be great if VV3 had some basic drawing and paint features. One of the great things about this program is the ease and spontaneity with which you can do things. Can you imagine all the cool stuff people would come up with if they could scribble and paint over their videos easily?

I know that Adobe AfterEffects is geared for that sort of thing, but it can't do what VV3 does and it's a hassle to have to go out to this program when you want to create certain effects that would probably be just as easy to do in VV -- if it had those tools.

While we're just being wistful (since such an app doesn't appear to exist that does the job quite right), this would have been a great feature for the late Viscosity. The app was already quite good at manipulating video via paint like tools, and it seems a relatively small leap to add something like "record actions in realtime" to take those paint actions and record them to a separate avi track. This kind of feature would be great for my Tribes2 (video game) league team, to distribute strategy movies with.

alas...maybe we'll see Viscosity's featureset show up in a future version of Vegas, ala CD architect and VV3? That would be quite the Frankenstein maneuver.

I believe Afterfx can do this (animate the drawing of shapes) and I think there was a tutorial for it somewhere maybe it even came with AfterFX. sorry I can't be more specific...

just thought of this... Camtasia has a feature where you can draw things with a pen while it records your screen. if you drew on a black background, you could key it out easily.

you'd have to record your 'Madden' drawings blind (without the source video underneath), but you could get all the animated drawing motion recorded and then drop it on top of your video in Vegas, key out the background, and there you have it.

I haven't tried this feature of Camtasia, but I've seen it in the preferences. you should be able to get super smooth recorded pen drawings if it performs like the rest of the program does.

actually you wouldn't really have to do it blind, you could try playing the video and recording that portion of your screen using Camtasia, and draw right on top of it. as long as you have a good system, and you DISABLE DISPLAY ACCELLERATION OPTIONS IN WINDOWS (there is a checkbox in CAmtasia to do this automatically), you could probably get a decent looking video if it's for web use.
