Subject:Clicks and skips when "ripping" CD
Posted by: mpacid

Greetings,

I have been having problems with "ripping" audio from some CD's. For example:
A CD I have is "moderately" scratched on the surface, but it will play fine in my
CD-walkman and my home stereo. When I try to rip the audio on my computer,
the resultant WAV file contains clicks and a few skips. I set the CD speed to 1x,
but the errors still occur. Oddly, when ripping a CD at 1x, it takes longer than 1x -
- a 60 min CD will take about 90 min to rip. I assume that this is because some
sort of error correction is going on. I have been able to remove most of the clicking
by using Sound Forge, but the skips remain. I don't think the scratches on the CD's
are very bad. Since I have this problem with quite a number of CD's, I would like to
avoid having to "de-scratch" all of them using those CD-fixing kits. Does anyone
have any idea what is causing this problem, or a possible solution?

My system:
Sound Forge 5.0 with Noise-Reduction Plug-in
766 MHz Celeron
196 MB RAM
Philips 12x CD-RW
20 GB 5400 RPM Hard-drive

Thanks for any insight!

M.P.

Are you using analog extraction or digital extraction? There will be much better error correction with digital extraction as the software can re-read a sector as many times as necessary to get a good read. On the other hand, sometimes analog will forgive an error that digital gives up on. So, whichever you're using, try the other. Overall digital is preferred as it will give you an exact copy of what's on the CD.

This can also be caused by your CD drive. I remember reading something a while back about older Philips drives not handling audio extraction that well. However, don't run out and buy a new unit so quickly. Grab the model number of your drive and head over to Philip's website. Download the latest firmware for your drive and flash it.

I remember reading that doing the above may 'help' clear up the problem.

Give that a try and reply back to this forum with the results.

Thank you for the replies, Chienworks and dcomo:

I am not sure. How do I check this, and change this setting?

I've gone to the Philips website, but it's not very helpful. It seems
like they only "support" their newest stuff. My PCRW1208 is about 1 year old -
- which I know is "very old" by current standards of progress.
I'll try to send them an e-mail.

Thanks again guys!

Maybe this is too simple but, also, be sure that you are not running any other programs while ripping (or burning). Some NIC (network), disk, and video drivers can cause the skips also. Probably running Win98?

I just bought a Sony 24X/10X/40X CD-RW drive for $80 USD with a $30 rebate so if it is your drive with a weak laser, a new one may be what you need.

You should be able to extract at 12X with no problems on the hardware you describe.
