Subject:Undo memory problem

I just installed SF 5.0f on my new computer with XP. When I am doing routine simple editing of dialog files, I get the message....An error has occurred while saving the undo information. You will not be able to undo this operation and your undo history will be cleared....

This seems to happen regardless of the undo buffer settings in "editing preferrences". Please advise.

I was hoping to see a concrete answer to your post as this occurs to me also. I can offer this which may or may not help you.

I find this only happens during adding markers on the fly or deleting at the front of a sound file.

It also seems to happen when it's about time to defrag then stops after defrag. This would make sense considering the space required for undoes.

The only recourse at the time of the error is to save the file and re-launch Sound Forge since most of the time Forge will not create further redoes in that session.

I am doing basic editing of dialog files, which involves cutting/trimming at the front and back of each file, muting extraneous noises between words, and boosting a few words or consonants here and there. After what seems like too few edits, I get the warning message.

Is there a way to clear the "undo" buffer? I open several short files at once, and save them off into a new folder. I wonder if closing a file after saving clears the buffer. It doesn't appear to do that, but it's difficult to tell the pattern.

Opening and closing SF each time it happens would REALLY slow me down, as it takes more time to do that than to do the editing.

Mark,

Saving the file clears the undo/redo list for that file. You can also right click in the undo/redo window (I leave mine docked) and select clear or clear all.

Thanks for the tip about keeping the undo/redo window open. Neat trick. Unfortunately, I am getting the error message after just an edit or two, and there doesn't seem to be a pattern. On some files it doesn't happen at all.

My temp buffer is about 15 GB for a 500 MB project, so that's not the issue. Are you on the XP operating system? This started happening to me after installing 5.0f on a new computer. Tech support hasn't come up with anything yet?

I'm using 98 SE.

If you don't already try using a temp folder on the same drive as your audio, options > preferences > perform.

I think Forge must create a complete copy of the file for every edit, so in your case at 500 MB/ file that's rather large after just a few edits.

As I stated above it only seems to happen when it's about time to defrag then stops after defrag so I haven't contacted tech support about this as I sort of felt it was due to my lack of diligent housekeeping.
