Subject:I just spent 70 bucks and this @##$$% thing won't download! Help!

I just blew some 70 bucks on Sound Forge 5.0 and it won't download. When I try I get an error statement that the computer doesn't recognize what sort of program it is and then it reccomends that I go to ActiveX and get a reader of some sort. When I do this I have no clue as to WHAT ActiveX control or program or what that I'm supposed to download. How the heck do I get what I just paid for or have I just wasted my money on a Sonic Foundry product? I'm gettin' a real bad feeling about this. The creeps at MusicMatch have wasted many hours of my time trying to unravel problems caused by a recent "upgrade" they conned me into. I have cleared that product off of my computer. I had high hopes for SoundForge, but the fact that I can't even get their download to work really bothers me. Also, when I tried to look for "call in" help, that want $3.00 a minute! This stinks. I refuse to believe these guys a good enough to be worth $180 an hour!

If there is anyone on this forum who can help me, I'd appreciate it. The total lack of technical support and meaninless FAQ's has me utterly frustrated. I'd like to give this product a chance, but I'm tinking of cancelling my order.

You can email me directly at ndrozdoff@hotmail.com if you know what I can do to get this download to work. I'm sure nobody else is interested in seeing a thread here.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

http://www.sonicfoundry.com/support/supportmail.asp

This will take you to the e-mail tech support.
I bought all my software from SF via a download, never had a problem. You might have an isolated case.
BTW, coming here with that kind of attitude is maybe not the best way to get help.

Sound Forge 5.0 and later needs DirectX 8 or later (to my knowledge).
Try to download and install DirectX 8 from M$ website, and you should have no problems. Also, you should get the Video Capture Update for DirectX 8 from the same site, just in case! Here is their website:
www.microsoft.com/directx

Here are the links to each file:

DirectX 8.1:
For WIndows 98, 98SE, ME:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/win98/Install/8.1/W98Me/EN-US/DX81eng.exe
For Windows 2000:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/win2000pro/Update/8.1/NT5/EN-US/DX81NTeng.exe

Video Capture Update for DirectX 8:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/win2000pro/dx8bda/8.0/W982KMe/EN-US/dx80bda.exe

Hope this helps! If you still have trouble, post your message here, and I will send you an e-mail! I understand frustration, so I am not upset with your expression of it here!

Just to be clear ... are you getting a file called UNKNOWN after download or are you getting messages while trying to install the downloaded file?

If the file is called UNKNOWN after download simply rename it to SoundForge.exe . I have had several files download as UNKNOWN from Sonic Foundry and since it's sporadic I haven't been able to determine whether it's my computer, SF servers or something going wrong with CRC during download. In any case, renaming the UNKNOWN file to "whatever".exe has always worked for me.

If you are getting messages during the installation read the message thoroughly and post the message here. The error message as you put it: "then it reccomends that I go to ActiveX and get a reader of some sort" doesn't help with trouble-shooting much.

BTW, you do not need the Video Capture update for DX8 if you download DX8.1 as the bda update is included in the 8.1 release.
