I think I understand absolute dB levels, but what does it mean to Normalize to a negative 6dB?

Negative 6dB is the "beginning of the orange or yellow" on your led meter. Where as "Normalize to zero" will raise your peak sample to the ceiling and raise all other accordingly, normalizing to -6dB does the same thing -- only at the -6dB level, so none of your wave file will make it out of the green, so to pseak.
