I am thinking about buying SF6.0 and am curious about the add-in Vegas 3.0 and how different this is from Vegas Audio. I am simply want to use SF to clean up and edit music files, and then use some kind of multitrack tool to mix and burn. Will this combination allow me to work multitrack audio? I understand that vegas audio is no longer available. Suggestions?

GL369,

Whoa - big question here. First off Vegas is not what I would call an "add-in". It is Sonic Foundry's fullblown multitracking application. It would run alongside Soundforge as a separate app. Vegas Video 3.0 is the very poorly named (but very well done) upgrade to Vegas Audio 2.0 Everything that was in VAudio 2.0 is in VVideo 3.0.

If you are just looking to clean up and edit files and then burn em - Vegas 3.0 will do you just fine. Hey - Roxio 5.1, Nero or Cooledit will do you just fine.

However - depending on how you define "editing", Soundforge is a great investment. It is a very feature packed app with a ton of capability. But - You also need to ask yourself how deep into this you wanna go. If you are just making mp3's and are just doing a bit of trimming and fading here and there, get something like CoolEdit. The Sonic Foundry apps have a solid, steady (and gratifying!) learning curve and many of us in here use them for professional level activities from video production to broadcast post production to recording live bands etc.

You just need see how wide your wallet is and decide if Soundforge/Vegas may be help you achieve your editing goals or if it may be overkill for your needs.

Cheers,

Cuzin B

Thanks! You addressed my question. I am looking to do a little more than just clean, trim, loop and edit - which I am able to do in SF4.5 (with the help the POWER! book). Actually, I am hoping to try "mixing" using a tool that will allow me to multitrack, and in my reaseach I found that Acid is "OK", but I think that Vegas goes the full length to get me into my own "DJ booth" of sorts. Of course all the extra features of Video editing is cool too! So, you've convinced me I should invest. Now I just wish that intro price $129 was still around!

One more question: In review of VV 3.0 and VV LE - there is a statement that LE does not support Mp3 saves - is it possible to save .wav or other formats? I would assume that I could convert to Mp3 after...

GL369,

Be advised that Vegas LE (as in Limited Edition) is just that. It has a limited feature set and the fact that it may not save MP3 (not sure since I have never used the LE version) may be one of the limitations. If you go up to the retail Vegas 3.0a or Soundforge 6.0, then no problem exporting MP3.

Between you, me and the fencepost - I find the MP3 export out of Soundforge 6 and Vegas 3.0 to be kinda crappy. I render my mixes to .wav files in these apps and then use AudioGrabber (with the LAME 3.91 MP3 converter) to do my MP3 conversion. This method results in drastically better MP3's across the board.

As far as file formats, these apps save to just about any format you can think of.

As far as the 129.95 offer goes - Are you a registered Soundforge 4.5 user? If so - then order up, my friend! That $129.95 is good until June 7, 2002. If you have any questions, please contact Customer Service at 1-800-577-6642 (weekdays 9am-5pm CST) or customerservice@sonicfoundry.com.

You will need your Soundforge 4.5 serial to complete the purchase....

Well.. I jumped the fence and bought 6.0, was going great with sound edits and using VV LE to put tracks onto this mix..and low and behold (as you warned) I can't BURN to CD with LE. Any suggestion how to retain the "track breaks" and get it to CD? Arrrghhh.. this is why CD Architect was so good - being part of SF4.0!

gl369,

Those are the breaks, man. A lot of us are very upset about the CD burning NOT included with SF6 but included with Vegas Video 3.0 (full). If you want to burn - you will have to upgrade to the full version of Vegas Video. But remember, we are going to try our damndest to get Sonic Foundry to put CDA back into 6.0...just gotta keep on them about it...

Me - I just break my files into regions, use Tools->Extract Regions to separate files and use Nero to burn...it's fast, easy and painless...and it works.

What are the disadvantages of using SF6 TAO features? I'm a bit confused at what the problem is?[besides doing duplications!!!] I still burn audio to cd using that in SF6. It's just not as slick as in VV3. Just select a audio file and burn...Whats the big difference in nero or easy cd creator/roxio? I don't like it because I have to close out of SF6 and open VV3 to do it the DAO way. It sucks I know when you have 7 or 8+ songs that need to be burned to cd but it CAN be done. My vote is for DAO in SF6 ASAP though I guess opening VV3 to burn my cd's is the same procedure that you had to follow with CDA right? You still had to open up another program and finish your work elsewhere. I would go the upgrade price from VV3 le to the full version though. I love this program [VV3]and see it as just another great investment for your work. Later.

SHUTNOT,

You are correct. Still have to open something else to get a burn going but if I am going to have to open something else...it's going to be a program designed specifically for burning. Takes me less than 2 minutes to extract my regions in SF. Minimize SF. Takes about 1 minute to setup in Nero and hit burn. Done.

Doesn't get any better than that.

ok.. I kinda get your point - can you tell me if SimpliCD would do the same as Nero? I mean, if I use SF regions into separate files then use SimpliCD to build burn - that would be the same as using Nero? I used to do this PlexWriter, but they do not support XP. Just bought SimpliCD too..

SimpliCD does not support DAO burning, so you would have 2sec gaps between tracks, same as SF. Get Nero, Feurio (even better) or Roxio ECDC. I use Roxio. Check to make sure your burner is supported whichever one you choose.
