Subject:Crashing problems with sf 5+6

i'm having some major conflict / hardware problems with both sf 5 and the newest version 6. Basically i'm trying to record quite long tracks of audio 30-45 mins in length. after on avearge 15-25 mins the computer freezes and then a bleep comes from the motherboard and the whole system crashes. this happens every time that i use it. I've checked for conflicts in the device manger and it says that everything is ok. this problem only occurs when i'm intensively using RAM. I thought that if i downloaded the latest version of sound forge, my problems would go away, however to no avail.

spec
2000 professional (latest drivers)
5.1 platinum creative sb
512MB Ram
i'm not very computer literate so i can't go any further in detail.

please someone must have a fix for this problem, i'm tearing what little hair i have left trying to sort it.

thanks

I am going to step out here and ask how much available disk space is left after a 20-25 session....these files must be getting kinda large...

Windows (any flavor) can start to act very strange if free disk space is compromised. See if you can get back here with a free space reading and maybe we can dig in a bit more?

Cheers,

Well...so much for that idea...

Tell me - what exactly are you recording? Is it a streaming audio thing or a CD or what?

What sample rate are you recording at in SF? I noticed you have a Soundblaster (which is not really what I would call a pro level card). A few other posts in here mentioned that Soundblasters do not record properly at 44.1KHZ but rather 48 KHZ.

Check up on that when you can.

it' sonly been in the last 2 months that this problem has occured. i've been using the saem equipment for the last 18 months with no problems. i'll try a different sample rate however i think it must be a more fundamental problem than that.

So prior to 2 months ago - you could take a SPDIF soundstream from your minidisk and roll 30 minutes of audio in SF and no problems? Anything change on the box in the last little while? Anything running in the background while your stream capture is going on in SF?

i've rewound the system to january. at this point the system worked 100%, i had no problems whatsoever. that's what's so baffling about the whole thing. i haven't put anything on the system that wasn't already there. i'm stumped as to what to do

So the system is set back to Jan right now and all is well? I don't mean to infer but something has happened in the last few months if the system is suddenly crashing...

Even a driver update or some very small insignificant change could cause problems...what else have you installed on this box?

as i said the system is exactly the same as when it was working perfectly in Jan. all i have added is soundforge. so this must be the problem, however, both version 5 and 6 cause exactly the same problems.

So Soundforge 5/or 6 is the newest addition? What were you using back in January? Some other package to record these minidisk streams? I guess I am now not clear on what you were doing in Jan compared with now. Did you roll back the system and then install Sooundforge. Or rollback after the SF install?

I rolled back my system to when i first installed the os. i knew at this point that everything was working 100%. I installed sf 5e. this is what i used back in January and was until 3 days ago when i got v6. both have the same problem with crashing. even on my brand new os, which is the one i reinstalled from January

My guess is that rolled back over something else - something that Soundforge (or it's subsystems) may have needed. If it were me - I would reinstall this box from scratch with just the apps that you need to get the job done.

Mysterious crashes can sometimes be fixed quick but I usually weigh my troubleshooting time against reinstall time. If it takes me like 4 hours to troubleshoot with no solution vs 2 hours to reinstall with guaranteed results - I know which road I would take.

Mind you my needs are different - I need Forge and Vegas for my business so we can't have downtime. Your needs are probably not that critical.

I had the same problem with my DAW, very similar hardware/software setup.

Basically, I removed SF5f and 6 from my system, and reinstalled 6, and have not had any problems. I had SF5f installed on another machine, so I had my preferences "saved" sort of, and I was able to recreate my settings with minimum hassle.

The versions are supposed to co-exist, but I couldn't get that to happen. Overall, I have had no major problems w/6, though I do not use it professionally.

I have since recorded 5 90min tapes to this machine, and not one failure. It does run well with NR2, Izotope and an Audiophile 2496.

BTW, it would probably not hurt to run chkdsk on your logical drives and then defrag...

Good Luck
