Subject:Sound Forge 6 and Vegas vs. Cool Edit Pro 2

I'm not sure which forum will give me the best response due to the multitracking usage, so I am posting this in the Vegas Forum also.

I was wondering if anyone out there has had a chance to use Vegas and Sound Forge 6, and also Cool Edit Pro 2. I've been looking at the demo of Cool Edit Pro 2 which looks very cool (no pun intended) and the beta version of Sound Forge 6. It will cost me the same amount to upgrade to either of the new versions, so I was wondering if anyone could elaborate on the major differences. I don't do extensive sound recording, but I do often have the need for the noise reduction feature, which both Cool Edit Pro 2 and Sound Forge 6 w/noise reduction plug in packages have.

Therefore, can anyone sum up benefits between one or the other? I do like the Cool Edit Pro feature of switching from multitrack to edit window instantly. Of course most of the time I'll be multitracking in Vegas, but occasionally I get the chance to do audio only projects. Possibly making Cool Edit better. Can anyone think of a better reason to go with Sound Forge 6 w/ noise reduction plugin?

Thanks for any input or insights you guys may have.

dont flame me, but take a look at how long its been since cool edit v1.2 and cool edit 2

the cep users werent nitpicking either, the thing they wanted was the ability to use realtime fx in the track view

jbjones,

You simply can't go wrong with Soundforge. It is a pro level app with pro level results (if you take the time to learn it). Add Vegas into the mix and you have a pretty unbeatable combo. CoolEdit is probably fine if your demands are not that high or you projects are not that critical.

I guess one thing I'm asking is, what makes Sound Forge a pro level app, with pro level results, when compared to Cool Edit? On the surface they seem very similar. But, since the upgrade price will be the same for either, I want to get the more capable program.

i own SF6. i have owned SF since like version 2.. thats what i use. But i did try CEP2. it is sweet. it has much better filtering FX and settings. The built in multi track is great for auditioning multiple clips, and it has red-book CD burning (just like SF used to...) but, i know SF, i use it well. Also, Wave Hammer is awesome, it makes it easy for me to work on maximizing/compressing sounds. Accoustic Mirror is really cool.
So.. there you have it. CEP has got the features, but SF has the history... it'd be a pain for me to switch, so when i had a chance this last upgrade, i didn't. Not knowing CEP that deeply, maybe its just a shiney surface, but i cannot edit audio files as well with it.

Hope that helps!

good luck which ever you choose

jbjones,

I guess I wasn't very clear in my first post. SoundForge is the industry standard 2 track editor. Very important to remember that - Soundforge does NOT do multitracking at all. If you need any mutlitrack capability - then CoolEdit is your choice. No need to go further - however, if you want excellent effects, a great editing platform, easy of use etc etc...for you 2 track editing...then SF id a great choice.

I did try Cool Edit Pro 2 a few times. One thing that I was not happy was that the play meters DID NOT work while I was previewing the effects. Maybe there is a way to activate them, I did not have the time to try, but I found it quite a drawback...
