You could split the audio, move one piece to a different track, and use track effects on it without affecting the other track. You could crossfade the two over for a smooth transition out of the effect.

The way I often do this is to split the track and take just the portion I want to effect into Sound Forge, apply the effect then save. It saves it as a 'take' over the original and I can still go back to the original if I don't like the effect in the later mix.

there is an itme on the right click menu called " apply destructive effects to tracks" or something like that but it ALWAYS sounds different than if you applied the same effects in sound forge or wavelab...if they fixed this, it would be really spiffy

You could set up an FX buss and send the track to that buss just for the amount of time you want.
