I just bought SoundForgeXP 5.0 mainly to use in conjunction with my video editing in VideoFactory 2.0, but I think I'm in way, way over my head with this stuff. What do most of you use SF-XP for? I was just trying to get a package that could help me do some basic edits like adjust volume and cut out sound clips. Any advice you could give me as to where I could learn more about this SF-XP would be appreciated. Thanks,Joe |

One of my biggest uses for Sound Forge is live recordings of concerts, plays, church services, etc. I take an output from the sound mixer, through a compressor, and into the sound card, record the entire event, edit, split into tracks, and save .wav files for burning to an audio CD. Sound Forge is very easy and painless for this process. The other big use i have for it is editing sound effects for theater productions and websites. |

Sounds like fun! Can I plug a microphone directly into the mic port on my PC and record through SoundForge into a .wav file. I'm interested in overdubbing some video? |

Absolutely! I do this at home a lot. You need to make sure your sound card is set to record from the proper input. Double click on the little yellow speaker icon to open up the sound card's mixing control panel. Select Options, Properties, Recording. There will be a list of volume controls to be shown. Make sure that at least Microphone and Line are checked. Click OK. You will now see the recording mixer (instead of the playback mixer). Select the Micrphone input and use the slider to adjust the volume. |

Thanks! That's awesome. Also, I've noticed since I loaded SF5.0 that my VideoFactory 2.0 is now having some troubles and I'm wondering if they are related. When I'm in VF and I start to playback my video, with audio, it hangs and says: "An error occurred while starting playback... unable to mix audio... the operation timed out". Do you know what is causing this and if it has anything to do with having installed SF5.0? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. |

If you have to cue from the video, you'll have to import the video into SF as an .avi file for reference. I think SF-6 will import Quicktime also. If SF and Video factory are open at the same time and have the same audio card selected, that could cause probelems. |
