I just migrated my NT system to Win2000. I run Avid ExpressDV 3.0 and Sound Forge 4.5 with downloaded updates. I can no longer record using Sound Forge since reinstalling Sound Forge after migrating the operating system. I CAN playback in Sound Forge however. My Avid still records and plays back. I'm using a Pyro basic DV card to get firewire in/out. Ican import files into Sound Forge and play them back. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Scott

Scott,

What do mean you can't record? Is there an error message popping up or something else to indicate that you cannot record? What happens when you open a new file and hit the record button? Please update with more info.

Cheers,

When I get into the record screen, I check "monitor" so I can verify my levels coming in. The problem I have now (after migrating to Win 2000 and reinstalling Sound Forge)is that no audio appears on the VU meters. I can press the record button, but all that gets recorded is silence. No error messages appear. Audio and video do come in clean when digitizing with the AVID software on this PC, just no apparent signal when trying to record with Sound Forge.

Thanks for your help!

Do you have the correct input (record device) set on the Wave tab under Options | Preferences?

sak,

I think JL (Jeff) is on the right track here. Make sure to check and see what's going on for input under Options->Prefs->Wave. You have to ensure that Forge is getting a signal from your soundcard before it can record it. Check which driver you have for your preferred recording device.

Update when you can.

I checked the options/wave/pref.

It was set on both playback & record to "Microsoft Sound Mapper". The other options are "None" or "Creative Sound Blaster PCI.

Thanks,

So you went to Creative labs and all is well?

I tried that, but still no sound recognized by Sound Forge.

Scott,

Let's back up a bit. So what sound card do you use for the Avid layout? What kind of card is it? When you play sounds through Forge - which card do the sounds come out of? Which speakers? Let's solve that first. Then look into the record issues - again sounds like a driver issue here...maybe one that Forge doesn't like?

Update when you can...

Cuzin B,

The PC has (2) jacks on the back for i/o. "My Computer" says I have a Creative Audio PCI (ES1371.ES1373)(WDM). Device is working properly. I have a set of Roland 3 way speakers plugged in to the output jack. Sounds play back fine over the speakers in Sound Forge and Avid. Sounds record fine in Avid, but nothing when trying to record in Sound Forge.

Thanks,
Scott

I'm wondering if you went into the preferences in sound forge options and selected the proper device for sf to use?

Can you elaborate what to change? I'd certainly like to try.

Scott,

What is this: "I'm using a Pyro basic DV card to get firewire in/out." I still can't figure out what your source material coming into the system is. Are you saying that some sort of feed is coming into your computer through this Pyro device and you want to record it? Or is there a mic plugged into the back of your Creative labs card....I need to know what your I/O is before we can fix this.

Basically, if your Pyro card is not an option as a device in Soundforge then there's your problem. It's pretty simple - Under Options->Prefs-Wave, tell Soundforge what device to use for input and what device to use for output. That's it.

Update when you can.

Cuzin B,

The Pyro basic DV card is the firewire PCI card in the PC. That is how Avid Express DV gets video and audio in to digitize and out to output to tape. That card is being fed by a Sony analog to DV transcoder. Unbalanced audio in from my mixer to the transcoder. Firewire out of the transcoder into the Pyro card. Also, the analog audio out jacks of the transcoder are plugged into the audio jack on the back of the PC. I'm assuming since nothing else has changed, Sound Forge used to receive it's audio from the Canopus firewire card that used to be in the PC. I guess I don't know how to tell Sound Forge that the Pyro card is there.

Scott,

I think you have figured it out. If Soundforge cannot be explictlt told "Use this card for recording" and "Use this one for playback", you hooped, my friend. Drivers for the Card is what you need.
