I had a similar issue when I tried to open QuickTime .mov files in VF. What resolved it was going to the QuickTime site, upgrading to the latest version of QT and selecting "authoring tools" as part of the components I wanted included in the upgrade. You have to have the authoring tools component installed in order to edit QuickTime files.

Thanks - I had reinstalled QT but didn't add in the "authoring tools" - a reinstall solved the problem.
