I'm having a tough time finding a way to get more treble response and less bass for voice work in my SF 4.5 version. Any suggestions? Thanks

Are you using the EQ filters at all? If so, what have you been trying to do that isn't working for you?

What kind of mic are you using & what is your input chain?

Actually, I'm trying to work with the EQ. Definitely don't have it down pat.

Mic is broadcast quality Electro Voice hand held. Not sure of what you mean by input chain.

Input chain would be how you have the mic connected to the computer. Is it plugged directly into the sound card? Are you using an external mixer or running it through a tape deck?

With the EQ, you might want to start with a lower number of bands first. Try the 10 band; this won't give as fine control, but it's a lot easier to get a general idea of what helps. Most vocals fall in the 250HZ to 2KHz range. Generally you can cut down anything below 250 without affecting the voice much. Adding a little in the 2K to 4K range makes the voice a little crisper and brings out some of the warmer overtones. Play.

Hi,
I have the mic plugged directly to the sound card. It has a canon plug, connected to adapters that take it down to a mini that goes into the card. It's in a recently purchased HP Pavilion 750c. My old HP Pavilion 4440 has a good sound, with no particular EQ settings from me, but I think that was just dumb luck. Question: Can I establish permanent settings for the EQ on the new computer that would be in place before I record my voice? Right now, I'm going from Process to EQ, applying the settings to get the sound I want and then saving. Like I said, on the other computer, the sound was good to start with. Thanks.

That depends on the sound circuitry and driver software that your new computer has. Some sound cards have an EQ function built in for recording, but most don't. Open up the sound card mixer control panel, select Options, make sure Advanced Controls is checked, click Options, Properties, Recording. If you have an [Advanced Controls] button underneath any of the inputs, you might be able to set bass & treble for it. Then again, you might not.

The other option would be to get a small mixer/mic preamp with tone controls and plug the microphone into this, then from this mixer go to the line input of the sound card. You would probably get better sound from the improved circuitry and have an easier method for controlling volume and EQ. But this will probably cost at least $100 for even the smallest units.
