Subject:"Another application has modified the file..." ?!?!

When I have a file open in Sound Forge 5, if I switch to another program (email, for example) and come back I'm greeted with the message "Another application has modified the file nnnn. The peak file will now be rebuilt." And I have to wait while this is done. What is going on here? Does anyone have a clue? Does this mean the file might have been damaged?
